Well called it earlier in the season when I said he probably would probably be back on the IL by June. I believe my words when he came back were, "I give him about a month or 2."

I didn't even have him making it out of his rehab assignment.

B-Ref's portrait gallery today has him tucked between Grayson Rodriguez and Kyle Bradish on rWAR contribution YTD, but they are all behind Albert Suarez who I guess is the most direct beneficiary if the Orioles follow through using a sixth starter to help with the coming weeks.

I guess Means now is where Bradish was around the Super Bowl.     Conservative treatment and good fortune, I don't yet rule him out as someone good enough to have their September form monitored if he isn't in surgical recovery.

I am not giving up on Means.   A little rest, some chewing gum,  maybe some duct tape.  I think he will be back.  His ERA is about 2.64 over the last two season.    Don't count him out yet.

That's sad.  Maybe he's just one of those guys who, despite a lot of God-given talent, just doesn't have the physical strength to handle his chosen profession.

Most pitchers don't, that's why they keep getting hurt. Means might be one of those cases where the surgery just doesn't quite get him back close enough to where he was, which would be very unfortunate for both him and the team.

Really sad for Means. Seems like a good dude. I think yesterday was the last time we see him pitch for the Orioles. Good luck to him and praying for a recovery so he can pitch again.

Surgery is always a risk, regardless.  Last stat I saw was 83% of  Pitchers who had TJ surgeries make a full recovery and come back to pitch.

This is why I am assuming nothing when Bautista comes back next year.

I hope for a fast recovery.  He's one of my favorite players.

Seems a little premature to think about trading for another starter.  Remember that we have Suarez stashed in the bullpen in case someone else gets hurt or Irvin turns back into a pumpkin.

Can we at least give Hunt back and get a do-over on Baumann?

The most incredible Means stat is that he hasn’t given up a stolen base since sometime during the 2020 season which is over 199 innings.

in his career (400+ innings) he gave up only two steals, four caught stealing and 3 pickoffs.  Small sample size but still pretty darn good

Again John Means is the product of being a decent pitcher on a horrendous 100+ loss team. People think he’s better than he is because of this. Similar to Cedric and Hays. These guys are replacement. With that being said, hope John the best but he’s probably done as an Oriole.

I'm fine with Baumann not being in the pen. I'd like them to upgrade his spot and Perez' spot as well.

Is there reason for hope that the initial IL is only 15 days and not more or is that just playing numbers?  Is there a benefit to putting him on the 15 day if they know its a 30 or 60 day stint?

No advantage to puting him on the 60 unless they need a 40 man slot.

    • The answer appears to be, yes, you can receive more than one compensation picks. Angels -- Shohei Ohtani: Pick after Competitive Balance Round B Blue Jays -- Matt Chapman: Pick after Round 4 Cubs -- Cody Bellinger: Pick after Competitive Balance Round B Padres -- Blake Snell: Pick after Round 4 Padres -- Josh Hader: Pick after Round 4
    • the question isn’t about being able to make the offers, it’s about being awarded compensatory picks for more than one.
    • I don’t consider a 4 o’clock game a night game. He also caught Wednesday night and Thursday day this week. Moral of the story is McCann will start 4 games in 7 days because he is Burnes preferred catcher.
    • It is absolutely possible. In 2022, the Mets gave a QO to Bassitt, Nikki, and DeGrom. The Red Sox gave a QO to Boegarts and Eovaldi. The Yankees gave a QO to Judge and Rizzo. The Dodgers gave a QO to Turner and Anderson. I know that it seems to be a foregone conclusion that Santander will not be on the team after this season, and while I generally agree that it is more probable than not that he will not be re-signed, I do think there is a non-zero chance that he will be retained. I think he is the most likely of Mullins, Hays, and himself to be retained, even if it is a small chance. The team has told us how they feel about his bat because he plays essentially everyday, and I have heard Kostka say that they value his clubhouse presence.
    • Santander won’t get a QO, and if he did, he would accept. His defense is declining and we have too many capable youngsters who should replace him effectively. But to your question, I don’t know if there’s a limit, but I doubt it.
    • O's will probably have to wait till July for a trade because there are so many more buyers than sellers.  I think teams like the Blue Jays, Rays Tigers and Mets are likely to be sellers but they are still in the race although not very good teams as constituted.
    • No Scott. He’s way too undependable. We need someone who WON’T enter a game and walk folks like he’s promoting a healthy lifestyle. He’s been a lot bette4 this season, but he’s too undependable, and we already have too many of those. No Flaherty either. That’s like taking your GF back after she cheated on you.
