The box score says Kyle Brnovich threw 142 pitches in 8 IP. Obviously wrong, but I love the thought of Bowie riding a guy who just came back from TJ surgery like it's Game 7 of the WS for a random game in April.

Just came here to post the same thing.  How funny is that?

Ha.  I saw that.  Guessing he went 4 or 5, someone else relieved, and they combined the stats of the two without ever listing the 2nd pitcher.

Per the Baysox recap:

Starting right-hander Kyle Brnovich went 4.2 innings of one-run ball with no walks and five strikeouts. The right-hander settled in after allowing a first inning homer and threw 3.2 consecutive shutout innings.

Out of the bullpen, Kyle Virbitsky (1-0) threw 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in his Double-A debut. Left-hander Trey McGough punched out three in two perfect innings of relief and Houston Roth pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to clinch Bowie’s first win of 2024.

"Skip, I've already thrown 130 pitches and this is my first start since Tommy John. And we're already up 18 runs. Are you sure I should go back out there for the 8th?"

"Dang it Brnovich we need this win. The people of Bowie need this win. You go out there and shove until I tell you to stop."

Skip: Brnovich, do you know how much Tommy John costs? We need to get the most out of that ligament!

"Babying pitchers isn't working, so we've decided to try something new. From now on, I'm going to ride everyone like I'm a 90s college baseball coach. No idea how long any of you will hold up, we're just throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks at this point."

Decent opening weekend for the Baysox, losing their opener 5-2 but coming back to win 19-1 and 4-3.  Pitching highlights were:

Kyle Brnovich 4.2 IP, 1 run, 2 hits, 0 BB, 5 K’s.  43 of 69 pitches were strikes.

Trayce Bright 3.2 IP, 0 runs, 2 hits, 2 BB, 6 K’s.  39 of 71 pitches for strikes, a bit less efficient than you’d like.

Zach Peek, 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 7 K’s, 30 of 45 pitches for strikes.

I’m very happy for both Brnovich and Peek, both of whom had TJ surgery in 2022 and spent most of last year rehabbing before returning late in the season.  Brnovich actually had started 2022 in the Norfolk rotation but went under the knife after just two starts.   Peek was at Bowie and doing pretty well 11 starts into his season when he got hurt.

The Baysox are off to a 9-6 start mostly due to their bats, which lead the Eastern League with an .819 OPS and 5.87 runs per game.  They have no fewer than 7 players with an .800+ OPS: Bencosme (1.026), Bowen (.989), Beavers (.972), Fabian (.969), Pavalony (.919), Cook (.815) and Ardoin (.805).

The pitching has been unremarkable so far.   The highlight has been Kyle Brnovich, who’s sporting a 2.08 ERA, 0.923 WHIP, and 10.4 K/9 in three starts.  Brnovich had reached AAA before his TJ surgery in mid-2022, so I expect he’ll get promoted before long if he remains effective for Bowie.
