The box score says Kyle Brnovich threw 142 pitches in 8 IP. Obviously wrong, but I love the thought of Bowie riding a guy who just came back from TJ surgery like it's Game 7 of the WS for a random game in April.

Just came here to post the same thing.  How funny is that?

Ha.  I saw that.  Guessing he went 4 or 5, someone else relieved, and they combined the stats of the two without ever listing the 2nd pitcher.

Per the Baysox recap:

Starting right-hander Kyle Brnovich went 4.2 innings of one-run ball with no walks and five strikeouts. The right-hander settled in after allowing a first inning homer and threw 3.2 consecutive shutout innings.

Out of the bullpen, Kyle Virbitsky (1-0) threw 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts in his Double-A debut. Left-hander Trey McGough punched out three in two perfect innings of relief and Houston Roth pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to clinch Bowie’s first win of 2024.

"Skip, I've already thrown 130 pitches and this is my first start since Tommy John. And we're already up 18 runs. Are you sure I should go back out there for the 8th?"

"Dang it Brnovich we need this win. The people of Bowie need this win. You go out there and shove until I tell you to stop."

Skip: Brnovich, do you know how much Tommy John costs? We need to get the most out of that ligament!

"Babying pitchers isn't working, so we've decided to try something new. From now on, I'm going to ride everyone like I'm a 90s college baseball coach. No idea how long any of you will hold up, we're just throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks at this point."

Decent opening weekend for the Baysox, losing their opener 5-2 but coming back to win 19-1 and 4-3.  Pitching highlights were:

Kyle Brnovich 4.2 IP, 1 run, 2 hits, 0 BB, 5 K’s.  43 of 69 pitches were strikes.

Trayce Bright 3.2 IP, 0 runs, 2 hits, 2 BB, 6 K’s.  39 of 71 pitches for strikes, a bit less efficient than you’d like.

Zach Peek, 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 7 K’s, 30 of 45 pitches for strikes.

I’m very happy for both Brnovich and Peek, both of whom had TJ surgery in 2022 and spent most of last year rehabbing before returning late in the season.  Brnovich actually had started 2022 in the Norfolk rotation but went under the knife after just two starts.   Peek was at Bowie and doing pretty well 11 starts into his season when he got hurt.

The Baysox are off to a 9-6 start mostly due to their bats, which lead the Eastern League with an .819 OPS and 5.87 runs per game.  They have no fewer than 7 players with an .800+ OPS: Bencosme (1.026), Bowen (.989), Beavers (.972), Fabian (.969), Pavalony (.919), Cook (.815) and Ardoin (.805).

The pitching has been unremarkable so far.   The highlight has been Kyle Brnovich, who’s sporting a 2.08 ERA, 0.923 WHIP, and 10.4 K/9 in three starts.  Brnovich had reached AAA before his TJ surgery in mid-2022, so I expect he’ll get promoted before long if he remains effective for Bowie.

    • I just couldn't do 8 years. Having visions of Chris Davis. Paying him to sit on his couch.
    • I agree. I would do that in a heartbeat.
    • I do remember I liked Ron Luciano.
    • So it’s better to have a top 50 prospect sitting on the bench versus guys that could actually fill a role and be a late game sub?  Keep in mind that they were good enough for two of the best teams in MLB last year.  This fan base is becoming entitled. I guess for the bullpen it’s Mason Miller/Josh Hader or bust.
    • 8/210 isn’t getting him. Thats just offer 26M a year. I said I would go 5/200. Go big on the AAV and lower on the years, in hopes to get 2-3 very good to elite years. If Im doing 5/200, it would be hard to not do 8/210.
    • It's a bit of a hot take, admittedly. We'll see. Mullins is having a weird season. He's got 6 bombs and 6 steals, which checks out with peak Mullins, but then he also has sub-.300 OBP and a .709 OPS. He's got a .310 OPS vs LHP.  So, is he hurting the team by being out there vs LHP, or is his defense making up for it? I'm not really sure which is more true right now. But if the team is looking for ways to get Hays ABs, that's one avenue they could explore.
    • Some of you will recall the thread I did last year tracking the Orioles' position players by 18-game segments.   I'm doing something similar this year, but I decided that 18-game segments were a bit too short, so I'm using 27-game segments this year, dividing the season into sixths.  The data I'm tracking appears on the chart below: Name        PA   rWAR   Rdrs    OPS  fWAR   OAA    wOBA    xwOBA Rutschman  119 1.2 2 0.816 0.9 1.2 0.361 0.383 Mountcastle 103 1.1 1 0.906 0.6 -3 0.393 0.395 Henderson 124 1.8 0 0.959 1.9 2 0.408 0.389 Westburg  101 1.4 1 0.903 1.3 1 0.394 0.422 Cowser 80 1.0 0 1.037 1.4 3 0.439 0.390 Mullins 100 0.7 1 0.717 0.7 2 0.311 0.304 Santander  113 0.3 0 0.728 0.3 1 0.319 0.302 O'Hearn  71 0.7 0 0.929 0.7 0 0.403 0.502  Hays 50 -0.8 -1 0.311 -0.7 -1 0.149 0.286 Urias 44 -0.1 0 0.484 -0.3 -1 0.215 0.214 McCann 43 0.0 -1 0.651 0.0 -0.3 0.284 0.323 Mateo 39 0.3 0 0.733 0.3 -1 0.328 0.292 Holliday 36 -0.5 -1 0.170 -0.3 3 0.089 0.155 Kjerstad 5 -0.1 0 0.000 -0.1 0 0.000 0.057 McKenna 1 0.1 0 2.000 0.0 0 1.000 0.281 It was quite a first segment, with five players (Henderson, Westburg, Rutschman, Mountcastle and Cowser) tracking at 1.0 rWAR or better for the segment, and three (Henderson, Cowser, Westburg) tracking at 1.0 fWAR or better.   Four players (Hays, Holliday, Urias, Kjerstad) were in negative territory, but the positives way outweigh the negatives.  Not coincidentally, the O's went 17-10 during the segment. Looking at wOBA vs. xwOBA, the ridiculous stat is that even at .403 wOBA (3rd best on the team), Ryan O'Hearn is underperforming his xwOBA by 99 points.   He's just been hitting the ball on the nose at a ridiculous rate. On defense, there are some major disagreements between Rdrs (which feeds into rWAR) and OAA (which feeds into fWAR).  Rdrs rates Mountcastle at +1 while OAA has him at -3; Holliday is at -1 Rdrs and +3 OAA; and Cowser is at 0 Rdrs and +3 OAA.   I must say, my "eye test" is more in agreement with Rdrs than OAA in all three cases.  (Note: there is no OAA for catchers, so I'm using Fangraphs' overall defense metric there for Rutschman and McCann.) It will be interesting to follow the ups and downs of the players as the season progresses.
