Well I don't think anyone is calling for Elias' head for signing Kemp, but I do think it's entirely fine to discuss the merits or maybe more precisely, the need for the move. I agree with you that losing $280K ish of money is no big deal, but it just seemed entirely unnecessary if they had planned to bring Holliday up this early.

Isn't Kemp guaranteed the full $1 million, not a prorated amount if he's released? That's what Spotrac seems to imply. If it were just he makes 35% more than minimum during the time he is here, then that's not a big deal, but the full $1 million implies he was not intended to hold a temporary spot.

i don't think anyone is saying not to question them, certainly not me. that's one of the purposes of this discussion board, people who like basically over analyzing it to death. 

But you definitely can assume elias and co are doing smart things, even if you don't get it. That of course doesn't make everything they do right or smart, but i'd assume i just don't get it before i assume they did something dumb. Discussion analysis ensues from there.

Why bring him up in the middle of a series? Something is just not right here. The timing doesn't make sense.

I truly think they didn't want the Game 1 to be with the Fenway opening day crowd.

Ah yes, the amazing chess playing Elias showed the rest of baseball by cornering the market on AAAA catchers that did nothing for the team that year or the future. :D

I get that, but I also think the development over a player who will play 1000 games is more important than winning 1 early season game.

If thats what its for, is not the long term development of a player more important than a couple of games at the end of 7 years?

Maybe Rubenstein meddled, and it was incomprehensible to Elias he'd be allowed to move on that easily!

Completely agree.  The Kemp signing was super odd.
 

 I do think they had this date on the calendar entire time, though.

My guess is, even Elias, who attends so many games home and away, couldn't stomach another at bat where Kemp looks slow and overwhelmed. 

I think that's where most of us stand on the Kemp signing. It made no sense and it wasn't necessary.

      Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.

      You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.

      The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.

      Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
