05/24 Roster Moves: Kremer to 15 Day IL and Heasley Optioned. Vespi and Tate Recalled.

The baseball gods are getting even with us for last year, when our rotation was incredibly healthy.  We came into the spring with 7 rotation candidates for 5 spots.   Five of those have now spent time on the IL, including 3 right now.   We’ve already used 8 starters this year and tomorrow it may be 9 if Povich is recalled.

I wonder who they boot from the 40 man if they bring Povich up. Oh I guess Baumann leaves us at 39?

Yeah seriously doubt Povich is recalled. Elias does not alter the development plan due to injuries at the big league level.

Then will tomorrow be a bullpen game? I’d rather see what Povich can do. With tomorrow being a day game I’d suspect they would fly Povich out tonight if he’s going to make his debut.

I’m hoping we hear news that he’s on his way or Povich is missing from the Norfolk game tonight.

Povich does make sense. For a game. Then he goes back down for another pen arm. Keep in mind off day after Boston series as well.

The timing of this is actually perfect. 4 games after Saturday and an off day. Depending on how Suarez is used can evaluate starters then.

Kremer and Means down in the last three days. Wells still down. Holding our breath with Bradish. No real closer. Mullins, Hays, Santander all struggling. This just might not be the year. Will be interesting to see if Elias is ready to really dip into the farm system to keep the wheels from falling off of this thing if it really starts going downhill.

Yeah. Things do not look great honestly.

I’m think Suarez might get the start tomorrow.  He did throw 11 pitches on Wednesday, but they might go with him if they don’t want to make a roster move with Povich.

Heasley?  What are the other choices.  He's cannon fodder.

BBREF showed us at 39, MLB shows us at 40 that's with Hunt added. I doubt they're going to add Povich right now, they wouldn't have optioned Heasley they would have released him I guess. Apparently, he's great in AAA.

Once again Elias will do anything to not promote young talent

I will take Elias decision record over what people think on this board.  The Orioles won 101 games last year and on a pace to win 101 this year.  There are 2 rookies in the Oriole lineup everyday in Cowser and Westburg.  Henderson is in his second year.

    • IMHO it's not about whether Crochet is an "opener" or a reliever, it's the innings.  He's never thrown more than 65 innings (at college in 2019) in his entire college or pro career and stands at 105.1 today.  Let that sink in.  On top of that, there is Crochet's TJ surgery, where he missed all of 2022 and had multiple stints on the IL in 2023 as he was recovering, tossing a total of 25 IP. Does any of this mean he cannot throw double (130 IP) or triple (195 IP) his prior max?  No one can say for certain, but I'd think any reasonable person would agree that, at the very least, it's a far riskier proposition for someone like Crochet than a pitcher who has been a starter and has thrown 150+ IP before.  So, to recap: The most innings he's ever thrown was 65 IP in college (2019) After throwing 54 innings of relief for the White Sox in 2021, he missed all of 2022 with Tommy John surgery He followed up in 2023 by throwing a total of 25 innings of relief, as he dealt with a couple of IL stints recovering from TJ His first ever pro start came this season and he's been dynamite through 105.1 IP Elias and Sig are well aware of the risks and it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
    • Gunnar doing a good job of hitting the ball to all fields.
    • Tell me the cost and I would probably sign up. What about you Qauntrill, Scherzer and Yates and you got to keep all top 4 prospects?
    • I’ll take them all. Skubal, Crochet, and Mason Miller. At least.
    • Btw, i understand what he could mean to the team. He could put a ring on our fingers if he can be healthy and be there where and when we need him in October.    That’s the conundrum.
    • It’s just the up and down roles. I agree the opener aspect is the best way to go(to keep him on routine) but you are going to go from pitching 1-3 innings and then hoping he can go 5-6 again, when he is already likely to wear down because of the total workload. It’s all a big risk. I mean, there is a reason he has whatever deal with the WS he has and that if they went against that, he wanted an extension. Even he understands that it’s a risk.
