I don't want to trade for a positional player but if we do it should be a right handed bat that is a rental veteran then can play some outfield.   We have a lot of left handed hitters in the outfield already in Mullins, Cowser, Kjerstadt, and Stowers.

Agree here. I think there's some room for a RH addition if he doesn't cost much. I don't think it's any real necessity, but if the price is right, it could be sensible.

Urias and MCcann are backups and won't see anytime time the playoffs if they are even still on roster which i am not sure they will be.  So only 4 of those guys have 80+ at bats

If you want to just look at batting averages The Dodgers bottom of the order starters are. 5 guys over 100 ab

Lux .204 147 ab

Pages .234 145 ab

Muncy .223 139 ab

Hernandez .205 117 ab

Outman .147 109 ab

Guardians 6 guys over 100 ab

Freeman .216 171 ab

Brennen .232 151 ab

Rocchio .207 150 ab

Bo Naylor .177 130 ab

Arias .215 107 ab

Florial .173 98 ab

The other contenders are not much different. Here is the list of teams over .500 with guys hitting .235 or lower and at least 100 at bats.

Yankees 3

Guardians 6

Royals 6

Twins 5

Mariners 6

Phillies 3

Braves 1 They have 4 guys in the ..240s though

Brewers 5

Dodgers 5

Giants 4 with 3 guys in .230-.245 range

Orioles 4

We're in the AL East.   That's the problem.

That's one of the divisions in which they've only got two teams over .500 right?

Not like the powerhouse AL Central.

Cool new avatar (or whatever we call it these days).

Mateo .236

Urias. 219

Gunnar/Adley will be eventually be pitched around until the others show they can produce.

Other than Cowser, think any of the current first place/top contending teams would run those guys out there consistently?  No guarantees calling up Mayo, Holliday, etc. would be the answer and already have holes in their game at AAA.

Time to spend that new owner money and make a run at it!

1) How much of other MLB teams do you watch or keep track of?

2) If Holliday and Mayo have “holes in their game” what position prospects in the sport do you like more?

3) Not another “new owner” (who has been here for TWO MONTHS) has to spend money.

4) We are going to make a run because we are one of the best teams in MLB (top 5/top 2 in the AL).

Boston, the third place team in the AL East, is eight back.

I don’t know about you. But I am in no one concerned about Boston, Tampa, or Toronto surpassing us this season or next season (for that matter).

I wonder how much that new poster who showed up (today or yesterday?) watches other teams? Speaking of the AL East like we are some inferior team. Speaking of guys to protect our young guys. Who “protects” Aaron Judge on the Yankees? That concept seems antiquated or is designated to an era gone by.

I agree with the pushback, but this does beg the question of why Mike went out and got Brett Phillips and Tony Kemp, and the gang, who were all worse than guys we already had. Aaron Hicks wasn’t terrible, but It’s legitimate to argue he wasn’t necessary. Frazier, too, wasn’t very good.

the fact that Mike did these things indicates the OP is not an impossible scenario, though unlikely Mike trade for anybody significant.

If we were to get somebody, I would want somebody short-term who makes lots of contact and has a high OBP. I don’t care about hitting Home runs. I care about getting on base.

McCann isn’t going anywhere because we don’t have anybody here who’s better than he is, and a catcher takes time to learn to work with the pitchers anyway.
It’s good to be backup catcher.

Do you foresee Boston, Toronto, Tampa finishing day within 10 games of us by season’s end?

The question is not about Toronto, Boston, or Tampa, but New York. We’re chasing them, and we need to do everything we can to catch them, because they aren’t slowing down.

No. That’s not what the poster said. He was talking about how daunting the AL East is/will be.

We don’t have to “catch” the Yankees in order to be in the playoffs.

    • They also haven’t announced the times, yet.
    • Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.
    • You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.
    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
