DSL Orioles 2024

One thing I found interesting in compiling the above post was all the 2023 bonus babies who didn't thrive in the DSL their first year, but are thriving now. A. Mejia, Morfe, and Amparo all fit in that category.   Then you have Guevara and J. Mejia who posted .800+ OPS numbers in 2023 but were asked to repeat anyway.

Baseball America.  30 prospects to know in the DSL.

Elvin Garcia, SS, Orioles

Signed for $500,000 out of the Dominican Republic, the 17-year-old Garcia has shown a promising mix of tools and skills with more physical upside remaining in his 6-foot-2, 165-pound frame. He’s a switch-hitter with good plate discipline and a knack for finding the sweet spot to make contact at a high clip. He’s hitting .370/.507/.611 through 71 plate appearances, drawing more walks (14) than strikeouts (13). Garcia hasn’t homered yet and isn’t a big slugger, but he makes consistent quality contact with a lot of doubles and triples that should start climbing over the fence in the next few years as he layers on more strength. He’s an athletic shortstop with plus speed, a plus arm and smooth actions at the position, along with a high baseball IQ. He’s one of most exciting shortstops the Orioles have signed out of Latin America in years.

Esteban Mejia, RHP, Orioles

The Orioles signed Mejia out of the Dominican Republic for $175,000 in January. The 17-year-old righthander had been up to 93 mph at the time and reached 95 in early spring outings. Now his fastball seldom dips under 93 after making another jump that has him reaching 98 mph and sitting at 93-96. At a listed 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him crack 100 mph eventually, but he’s already overpowering hitters in the DSL, where he has a 3.38 ERA in 10.2 innings over four starts, striking out 15 with five walks. Mejia’s fastball was his main pitch as an amateur, but he has quickly developed a slider that he shows aptitude to spin to get a good amount of swing-and-miss.

The top Orange pitchers for now are:

  • Keefer Morfe (18), 4 GS, 12.0 IP, 0.75 ERA, 1.000 WHIP, 15.0 K/9, 5.0 K/BB ($210 k bonus in 2023; repeating after posting a 7.01 ERA last year

Make that an 0.56 ERA after 4 no-hit innings today, walking 1 and striking out 9.  Morfe is certainly getting interesting!

It’s kind of a shame that the FCL season ends in 3 weeks.  Seems like Morfe needs more of a challenge.

Is Delmarva out of the question?  He's in Florida, but probably needs to extend his visa.

Also gotta wonder how many IP they'll give him too.

He’s not in Florida, he’s in the DSL.  I did notice that at least one of our pitchers split time between the DSL and the FCL last summer, so I guess getting a visa is difficult but not necessarily impossible.  But I’ll be surprised if he jumps from the DSL to Delmarva.

Frobby favorite Esteban Luna was on the mound today for Orioles Black, allowing 1 run in 4 IP on 3 hits and 2 walks, only striking out 1.   While that was arguably his worst outing of the year, he still hasn’t allowed more than 1 run in an inning, and his ERA stands at 1.00 in 18 IP over 5 outings.  Not bad for the second-youngest pitcher on the squad (17, turns 18 on 9/28).

    • Ha.  Let me guess.  Ryan Mountcastle and Kyle Stowers.  😀
    • Kiley McDaniel newest mock has us taking college SS Kaelen Culpepper. Mentions that we are considered to be the floor with Carson Benge, but he goes to Milwaukee at 17 (who Kiley says is “all over” him). Also lists Kellon Lindsey, Dakota Jordan, Vance Honeycutt as guys we’ve been “mentioned” with, as well as Brody Brecht. Says we appear to be “shooting for upside.”
    • JD Martinez would be nice right now. I know I wasnt the only one who wanted him
    • What you just named are a bunch of guys with poor approaches…so I wouldn’t expect them to be reliable in any situation. I mean, Mounty and Santander can certainly get scorching hot and Mullins and Hays have been good players in the past but none of them are guys you feel confident in unless they get a hit. For all the grief we gave guys like Hicks and Frazier last year, they had good approaches and would take good at bats, even when they were sucking. They didn’t do much with anything most of the time but you at least felt good about them giving you a good at bat most of the time.  That’s why I think Cowser will eventually be really good in these situations. It’s why I think Adley is good in them…same with Gunnar.  Same with Holliday when he gets up here  But players with poor approaches who like to go fishing a lot?  It’s just not going to work out for them in the long run.
    • It did need to be pointed out though. 24 year old at high A is no great feat. Basallo is at double A 5 years younger. Sometimes you have to swallow your pride and look around for help. I would continue to try to poach coaches and scouts from great organization at developing pitching. The Pirates already had Skenes and Jones come up. They have 2 kids in Harrington and Chandler coming soon. They have invested in pitching and now are set for the future barring injury.
    • It was 6-9 last year as well IIRC.
    • It’s okay.  It’s a “Phil” thing.  Have you ever noticed any poster with the name “Phil” all have something else in common?   🙂
