Here’s what the website says for what it’s worth…

Manager Brandon Hyde said the club plans to push its other starters back a day for additional rest, which would line up right-hander Albert Suárez to start Sunday's series finale.

Any plan that doesn’t call for Burnes and Eflin pitching every 5 days is a bad plan. Need as many starts out of them as possible.

Teams are increasingly giving starters 5 days rest as much as possible.  There's some data that supports this; average era is around 0.15 or 0.20 lower on 5 days rest.

I think you should run Burnes out there no matter what but I'd understand why they are opting for more rest.

Suarez has a lot of innings this year already so not that baffling.  He is at 160 innings so far this season.

Suarez has 105.2 innings combined between the majors and minors so far, Burnes doesn't even have 160

You forgot he pitched 55 innings in Winter ball in December and January.  He went from that had two weeks off before Spring training started. He is gonna have 200+ innings in one Calender year by the end of the regular season.

It really stinks that the Orioles don't have any better options than Povich. The guy can't throw strikes. He walks to many people. The Orioles will be lucky if he can get through 4-5 innings. It is going to be hard to win tonight when you start a guy like him.

7 innings in each of his last 2 starts for the Tides. I don’t think any of us predicted a stinker from Burnes last night so maybe the weirdness continues. Going to boldly predict:

6.2 inn, 1 BB, 5K and 2 ER from Cade tonight. Cano will close the door in the 7th to strand a couple and preserve the win for Cade.

Povich returns with the International League K-BB lead at 70 innings.

Povich, McDermott, Will Warren and Louie Varland the top 4 a nice assortment of the "best AAA" types for intermittent spot start use.

We'll see how he looks, but I think April 2025 Povich and Kjerstad similar for SP5 and RF - it could be worth finding out what you have in case you don't have to trade for next year's Trevor Rogers or Austin Hays.

The first half 2024 Orioles kept up the 100-win pace well enough with Cole Irvin often in that role.

Very interesting that in his recent AAA starts, Povich threw a lot of sinkers and sweepers, but in his gem last night he completely cut out the cutter and the sinker.

He kept the higher sweeper usage, including against RH batters, so it seems to have replaced the cutter.

This all worked last night because he kept a pretty low percentage of fastballs at 45%, but was able to throw his soft stuff for strikes.

Ultimately I don’t really think changes in pitch mix made the difference here. He looked like he did in the good Braves start, commanding the four seamer at the top of the zone and the curve at the bottom of the zone. That’s really the key for him. The changeup off the plate to righties was also a good pitch for him last night, and maybe the sweeper will be the in-zone pitch for him to go to other than the fastball.

This did not age well.

This was an amazingly close prediction, well done. Sadly, you missed on the most important part…

Good Analysis.  That's pretty much that "make it or break it" for most non flame throwing SP.  If they can throw their off speed pitches for strikes while not getting pummeled.  He had good command.

Maybe ditching the cutter/sinker will make his FB velo go up eventually.
