How far do you go to try to save this?

With a front line starter out for the year and probably our best reliever so far out for months from a bullpen that already needed help, we're now looking at trying to get at least a mid-rotation starter and at least two relievers at the deadline. For that kind of help in a seller's market with so many teams still in playoff contention, I don't think the Norbys and Stowerses are going to do it. How much are you willing to give up to try to save this thing?

If you think we are a top 4 team in baseball, you make an addition and go all in. Everyone not named Holliday, basallo and mayo are probably on the table.

kjerstad and norby some of the bigger pieces we can offer, but probably everyone else is available, especially for controllable starters.

Because of the Corbin Burnes trade, we are pot committed to this season.  We need to be willing to trade some (not all) of our top propsects to get top-line talent back.  We shouldn't trade Kjerstad or anyone above him for a pure rental, but if someone like Tarik Skubal who has multiple years of control becomes available, we should be willing to part with a package headlined by Basallo or Mayo.

This is where I'm at too.  What other year are we going to have a Cy Young front runner.

Starting to feel like more and more one of Holliday, Mayo and Basallo may have to be on the table if we're talking about a top pitcher or two.

And the problem is, for prospects we may want to keep as well as pitchers we may covet, there's no such thing as "can't miss."

What controllable top starting pitcher is available you’d be willing to give up one of those three for? It’s still early, so other teams may fall out of contention. But a lot of the guys that have been floated as options thus far haven’t Carly felt like that type.

Luzardo? His control is the only reason at the moment given the way he’s pitching.

crochet? No thanks. He’s gonna hit an innings limit at some point this year and I don’t want to rely on him down the stretch to be our key acquisition.

Framber? Verlander? Kikuchi? All rentals. Can’t give up that caliber for a rental.

Could Kjerstad get us Sonny Gray?

I would make that trade for sure (presumably it would include more than just Kjerstad), but even if the Cardinals fall out of contention it would be strange for them to trade someone who they just signed to a 3 year contract and who is pitching very well.

I still think you try to get a mid rotation arm that could be in the mix with Irvin or kremer for #3 playoff starter. Then you get at least one bullpen arm. Preferably one that throws gas.

That all may be expensive, but doesn’t have to be demonstratively so, and gives us a good chance in the tourney IMO.

Two things:

-Orioles will set the market for trades as their prospects are the most sought after (espn)

-They can afford (theoretically) to add payroll which very few teams can due to either luxury issues or concerns over RSN payments
