Why not Chayce McDermott?

I doubt that will be the rotation.

I know that won’t be the rotation.  We have added a veteran starter each of the last few years but now all the sudden the doom and gloom people act like we will do nothing.  I expect either one top of rotation type or 2 solid starters.   1 will probably be in July this year with team control.

You definitely don't want someone starting with that walk rate. At least with a bullpen guy you can control the damage a bit.

If he's still here, it seems pretty good chance rest of 2024 he will break in with something like the Albert Suarez role.

Is he a starter or reliever?    Who cares?     Get enough outs ala Month1 Rodrigo Lopez or John Means or Spencer Strider and your role will grow.    Don't and it won't.

McDermott year to date leads all minor league pitchers in pitches thrown.     There's only 10 other guys at 1200; he is at 1350...he is the Logan Webb of AAA workload wise if not as many clean innings.

101 K in 70 IP in AAA. He’s 2nd in all of milb in K. We pound the table for our hitting prospects like Kjerstad and Norby, why not McDermott?

We can back off Suarez and put him in the pen. Heck, we could go back to Suarez in a few weeks if we need to, but this would be a load management move. Suarez threw some innings in winter ball too. It looks like that is adding up.

You conveniently left out the 43 walks in 70 innings and the less than 5IP per start.

Command and control

Yeah but we're kind of desperate for any pitcher who has good stuff. It's time to try him in the bullpen to see if he can help. If not, you send him back down. But the staff is on fumes, and no one else at AAA can really conceivably help you. It's an atrocious bullpen down there. Like really, really terrible. So much so that it kind of reads as a misstep from Elias. He targeted some interesting guys for minor league deals/waiver claims this past offseason to stash in AAA, but precisely zero of them have worked out.

It's time to see what McDermott can do in the majors. It's certainly no guarantee but our options are extremely limited until the deadline gets here.

I would give Luis Gonzalez the promotion first. He has been pretty solid. Results were bad in his last outing, but nothing hit that hard.

a 93 mph, 344' HR, 91 mph single, 98 mph 2B in the inning, but also had 3K

Sure, but the OP suggests McDermott as a starter.  If you’ll notice, it allows Suarez to go back to the bullpen.

I guess McDermott could be the next try. The old Oriole way for young starting pitching was bull pen first. Don't know what other in house options there are. We could be at a point where this is the best of bad options.

Maybe the walk rate goes down and he pitches more aggressively with the WALL and our defense.  He doesn't have to strike everyone out.  Just throwing that out there.

Yes.  McDermott to the rotation for a start until Kremer is back.  Suarez goes to the pen to freshen up.  That's like 3 birds with 1 stone.

One start.  Ok.  Won’t kill anyone but I wouldn’t expect anything over 5 innings.  Probably less.

One start.  Suarez has ran out of some steam.  We get to back off him a bit and buy us some time do see Kremer in another rehab start.  I think this is a realistic option with all the consecutive games.

Also, it seems far fetched to think that the defense and the Wall could offset the BB struggles in MLB, but is it really?  He could be more aggressive up here.
