It's crazy how static the division standings have been. Since July 1:

• Yankees 25-26
• Orioles 26-28
• Sox 26-27
• Rays 25-27
• Jays 28-27

Red Sox have failed to take advantage. And now look who's just 1/2 game behind them and closing fast (8-2), the Tigers! Still nine games behind us, though.

If Orioles go 12-12 in their final 24 games (which feels like an enormous ask right now), the records required for each team to finish ahead (incl tiebreakers) are:

TBR: 25-1

Sea: 23-2

Det: 22-2

Bos: 22-3

KC: 17-7

Min: 18-8

Hou: 16-9

Cle: 13-12

NYY: 12-13 or 13-12 (Orioles need 1 win in final 3 vs NYY to clinch tiebreaker)

The same tiebreakers (assuming any are 2-way TBs) apply to division championships, seeding among division champions, and wild card seeding.

The minimum I'd like to see from the Orioles is a #4 seed where at least they would get to play 3 games at home.  I believe 12-12 is about 75-85% likely to get that done.

Was just looking at the Tigers schedule and unless they stick to every 5 days for Skubal (ie, he doesn’t get the extra day off when they have a day off), it appears we will miss him for both series we play them.

Win 5 of the next 6.

Go 4-2 vs Det and 2-1 vs SF.

That’s 11 wins.

Leaves you with NY, Boston and Minnesota. 9 games. Can you win 3 of those? Can you get to the point where the final series means nothing?

To me, these next 6 games are crucial vs CWS and TB. You need to clean up against those teams. Anything less than 5 wins has to be seen as a failure if you want to win this division.

I would agree with you but let’s be honest the Yankees are not doing anything to show they are gonna get hot.  Before the Rockies all I read was we have to sweep or the Yankees will start to pull away.  We took just 2 of 3 and gained a game in the standings.  Just keep winning the series and make the Yankees do the same or we win the division.

I would rather us not win the division. I think this team, especially our offense will struggle in the ALDS with a week off.

I’ll take the extra days off every time, especially with the way this team is banged up.

I feel the same way. All the 100-win teams last year who had the bye (O's, Braves, Dodgers) didn't last long in the playoffs.

Valid point, but I prefer to think of it like consistent play without a break is a consolation for losing the division. They may not even make the ALDS if they don’t win the division…and that’s just not cool man, not at all.
