Why does Povich even need to be called up? They can stick with McDermott. Or if they want Povich, just send down McDermott for him.

McDermott has already been sent down

Per Roch: Hays ranks in the top 50 in Orioles history in doubles (36th with 121), runs (47th with 269), home runs (tied for 47th with 66), RBIs (49th with 242).

That's an interesting way to frame things. How good is the 50th-best Oriole non-pitcher of all time? The 50th-highest rWAR total in modern Orioles history, again among non-pitchers, is coincidentally Austin Hays (what are the odds of that?!), at 9.4, a few hundredth behind Andy Etchebarren and half a win ahead of Mickey Tettleton.

1. Cal, 95.9

10. Frank, 32.4

20. Rick Dempsey, 21.2

25. BJ Surhoff, 17.7

30. Jonathan Schoop, 15.2

35. Gunnar, 13.7

40. Chris Davis, 12.1

45. Santander (for the moment), 10.4

50. Hays

75. Cal Abrams, 5.8

100. Pat Kelly, 3.7

150. Gene Stephens, 1.5

200. Al Smith, 0.8

If you count 502 PAs as a full season, there have only been 191 Orioles reach that level since 1954.

Elias just traded Hays who  is not a free agent until after the 2025 season. In return he got reliever that has an 8m option which means the O's probably non tender Dominguez after the 2024 season.

Unless Dominguez craps the bed, they use the option on Dominguez and Kimbrel.

With Cano and a healthy Mountain, they will have a strong BP in 2025.

Well if you think Dominguez will be worth 8m next year.   I doubt it.

Hays in another organization is an everyday corner outfielder with a great arm and  average mobility.  When he is healthy he hits.  He is 28 which means is not old and was an All Star is 2023.

When Hays only returns an average middle reliever who is a rental that shows how hard it is for Elias to acquire pitching without trading his best prospects.

Hays is a likely nontender after the season too.   With what he would get in arbitration.   So in that respect it was a likely nontender for a likely not-picking-up-the-option.

TBD... I do think he'll be better than the last guy in the BP and a Givens type contract.

Povich and McDermott are both in the minors right now.

We need them both for the doubleheader Monday, barring any other moves between now and then.

Povich's 15 days will be up, so he can be officially called up Monday.   McDermott can't, but he can come up for one day to be the 27th man on the roster that you are allowed to have for a doubleheader, and then go right back down.

No it isn't.   The Puk trade shows you can get relievers, especially rentals, for mid level prospects.   What this trade shows is Elias didn't see Hays as an integral part of the 2nd half and found the best match he could.

Pache is textbook swing decision/swing hard in case you hit it approach: plus EV, plus HH%, plus Chase%, and plus BB%...  with an awful Whiff%.

This is why Pache is a little bit more interesting offensively than his horrible numbers indicate. That and he is a former top prospect, so there’s some talent there.

It’s a bit baffling that his Statcast page adds up to .254 xWOBA. He’s well in red territory for EV, Hard Hit%, Chase% and BB%….even with the terrible whiff rate that should come out to something better. It’s not a wet noodle of a bat. Everything hit hard must be hit into the ground…but even that should come out to better than a .187 xBA? Feels like a swing plane/launch angle fix is sorely needed.
