34 Man Roster 34 Full Scholarships

Recommended Posts

Haven’t seen this posted anywhere & didn’t know the best forum.  Big news for prep baseball players.  NCAA is allowing teams to give out scholarships for all players on their roster.  Roster size is also dropping form 40 to 34.  It’s going into effect fall ‘25. It will be interesting to see how this effects players signability moving forward.

Its great that they are increasing then number of scholarships, issue is will those scholarships be funded by the school?  Most college sports lose money, increase the amount of scholarships, if they are funded, the sport loses even more money.

What is the actual cost of giving an athlete a scholarship to a D1 school? I'd be fascinated to know. My sense is that it is far less than the "sticker cost" we all pay/paid to educate our children.

Schools aren't required to use the maximum allowable number of scholarships.  Most won't.  I'm pretty sure that Title IX is still in effect, meaning for every male athletic scholarship that a school gives out, they must also give out a female athletic scholarship.  This change probably affects the top baseball schools, but I'm guessing that it won't change most schools very much.

I spoke to my friend who is a head coach at a Big 10 school.  He’s unsure currently if the school will fund the additional scholarships.

Regardless, I think most mid-major D1 schools will increase at least slightly.  The top schools will be completely funded.

There Will also be a trickle down effect from the roster crunch from 40 to 34.  A lot of players who would have otherwise gone to a top tier school will be going down a notch and increasing the talent distribution.

All in all it’s great.  College baseball is growing and as they find more ways to monetize D1 baseball the scholarship given out should continue to increase.

Yeah, it’s great to see it go from 11.5 scholarships to as many as 34. NIL and the portal have changed the game. A lot more kids out of HS will have to go to a lower division school and potentially transfer up. Almost to a minors/majors relationship.

My hope is that the JUCO schools will rise in prominence again.

Interesting. My first take was that this would hurt the juco schools, which were benefitting from the new transfer rules + scholarship limits.

A lot of freshmen were committing to D1 schools, only to have a junior transfer in and take their opportunity. So the worm started to turn and those freshmen were choosing juco and would be the ones transferring to major D1 later.

It will shake out, and I think we’ll see more kids go JUCO and small schools to start. Not in places like Stanford, UVA and Vandy, where grades are an issue and they don’t do many kids from the portal.

A lot of kids who committed to power 5 schools in previous years would play Fall ball and transfer out before Spring. They realized they weren’t ready yet. With the NIL and the portal, along with smaller drafts by MLB, more kids are playing longer in college as well.

    • That's just McCann after he got drilled in the face.
    • Super valid points though I think the hitting has been the issue more than the pitching which has amounted for the majority of the injuries.
    • There has to be something hurt. His physical metrics are down from last year when there isn’t any reason they should drop. He’s was very good the first half of the year and then immediately fell off a cliff for July, August and now September. I’d be shocked if we don’t find out that he’s been playing a lot more hurt than they are telling us.
    • Maybe he plans on taking credit for either happening..?
    • I think the start of a young player is huge for guys coming up in the majors especially the younger talented ones.  This is the first time some of them have struggled and had real pressure on them being brought up in a pennant race.  Both Mayo and Holliday are Hugh school picks and never been in a huge stage compared to say Dylan Crews another young player breaking in.  Crews played for LSU in the Sec where there was huge crowds and pressure in weekend series there then they made a run through the playoffs and to the College World Series facing some of the best pitching prospects in the game.  In Crews’s case he even faced Skeenes in an inter squad game.  So he was facing top talent and in a much bigger stage than even minor league baseball.  Holliday and Mayo were playing against an 16-18 year old computer nerd in high school who through 80 mph.  Yes they played some games in travel ball and showcases against better high school kids but still not same then playing in college baseball playoff tournaments and World Series type games.  Henderson seemed to have similar struggles.  The two guys that seemed to adjust better Rutschman and Westburg played college ball and major conferences along with Super regionals atmosphere.
    • Is it possible to lose a three game series in just one game? I wonder if the O’s will find a way…
