Seranthony Domínguez 2024

Two months ago all the board was clamoring for high whiff relievers and that us not having anyone was killing the bullpen and we needed to trade for some.  We added Smith, Dominguez, and Soto all high strikeout guys but also guys that give up homers like candy.  High strikeout out guys are great but you are gonna give up more homers because you pitch up in the zone more often.

Cionel has the best strikeout ability. I thought when Felix went down, using him to match up would compliment the use of Cano (or this year Dominguez).

Plus we know he wont give up a homer often if at all.  He hasn't given up any since May of 2023.

You're putting words in the board's collective mouths, most knowledgeable posters wanted GOOD high leverage relievers at the deadline. That's not what Dominguez or Soto are, especially not Soto.  Dominguez is a fringe high leverage guy, and the Hays trade was a very good trade more so because dumping Hays was addition by subtraction. But Dominguez is a 7th inning guy who is now forced to be our closer, and that is a reflection of the awful job Elias did addressing the bullpen at the deadline. MUCH more in addition to Dominguez was needed.

Elias seems to go after relievers with major control issues thinking that this organization can fix those issues. That's been a poor strategy this season. It's also not the correct strategy for a team needing to win games in a tight division race NOW. And aside from dumpster dive projects, Elias completely failed to address this team's most significant issue in general - the bullpen. Solid relievers that aren't closers aren't as hard to find at the deadline as good starting pitchers are, which makes Elias overpaying for a mediocre SP like Rogers even more inexcusable. Stowers, Johnson, Chace, and Norby (and I would have held onto Norby) should have been allocated towards better relievers, not Rogers and a Phillies reject.

Too many HRs, that’s the knock on him.  Just seems to continually get into counts where the hitter knows to expect a FB.  Needs to be able to locate his offspeed pitches better.  Frustrating.

Yeah, it certainly didn't help in the final at bat today when he put 0-2 and 1-2 six inches into the opposite batter's box.

Few MLB hitters are chasing pitches that far off the plate.  That stuff's got to be located better to get the desired K.  Instead, he let him right back into the at bat, and the rest is history.

I would rather have a groundball pitcher who doesn't walk batters than a flyball pitcher w/ a high K rate and gives up walks.  K's aren't everything.

Like Clay Holmes?  Groundball pitchers give up more contact, and are susceptible to BABIP induced failure.  Tbf Clay Holmes is an excellent pitcher and I'd take him in a heartbeat.

That homerun rate is definitely inflated right now. Last year he had a 1.3 HR/9 and this year with the Phillies it was 1.5. With the O's, it's approaching 3 after today's debacle. I don't know if that's just SSS, poor pitch selection, or some combination of the 2 driving it right now, but he was really good prior to that Boston outing. But allowing 3 dingers in back-to-back-to-back games is really going to hit the ole confidence section.
