I'm sorry...what did he say that threw the Orioles under the bus?   I remember him saying that he was "going to a team with maybe a better chance of winning it all" or something like that.   I would expect him to say something like that.

It was a subtle jab. You know that. He could have simply said "happy to be here with such a great team". Adding the "with a better chance of wining it all" was a jab at the Orioles. But whatever. People hear what they wanna here.

We could get 3 extra 1st rd picks for next draft,

- Cowser if wins ROY

- Burnes if he leaves

- Santa if he leaves

Those 3 first rd picks, or even 2, will help replenish the value of the prospects we just traded.  Most were blocked or going to be blocked.

The possible picks doesn’t include our own 1st rounder , correct ?

Are we still eligible for’competive balance’ pick also ?

Picks after the first round but before the comp rd A.  We're a revenue sharing team plus Santa/Burnes will get 50+ million total.

Yeah those are big additions to the farm, especially after the O's gave up 2 2nd round picks from last year to the Rays.  I still can't wrap my head around the fact that the O's gave up an actual 1st round pick for Mark f#$king Trumbo.  Tell me that Duquette sucked at asset management w/o telling me that Duquette sucked at asset management.

Correct.  Toronto and Houston are not revenue sharing teams.  We are.  That's why we get a Comp pick in alternating rounds A & B each year outside of Free Agency Compensation.

Thanks for answering that one . Good to learn new stuff like this

True.   It may be a subtle jab, but I would expect  him to say something like that.   I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

I am a very passionate person by nature and very impatient. The facts and after action analysis say that I was wrong and needed to wait to let the whole thing play out.

In hindsight (as we know now) there was no big move to make. I think contenders were scared off by Crochet not being available in the post season and the CHI SOX probably reasoned it would be better to wait until the offseason. I don’t know what DET’s rationale is other than they didn’t want to alienate their fanbase with an underwhelming return because their expectations were so high. Plus DET now is Lions town/country (Big Time) and the Tigers probably don’t want to risk being knocked further down the pecking order in that market.

I am serious though.  I am very impressed at your take.  I have pushed back on you quite a bit and I am not a super frequent poster.  I love your passion and I appreciate that you always seem respectful even if folks disagree.  I just think credit is due when people see more info and say....I have a different view now.

Now back to what we agree on...

I want to win a World Series.  Maybe that Holliday kid we couldn't give away will turn out to be something after all.

Hat tip to you sir.  Keep the faith.  Elias isn't perfect and our owners are not going to spend billions and billions, but we are one of the best teams and organizations in the biz.  And it hasn't been that way since I was a kid.

I was as underwhelmed as anyone (in particular after the Rodgers trade), but after taking some time to think, sleep, and reflect; I think Elias did as well as anyone and as well as you could realistically expect considering who was moved and who was not.

After seeing all the transactions, (S/O to @Sanfran327 for laying them all out!) I can see the vision Elias had which I believe is - Instead of taking one big swing for the fences, just try to hit as many singles as you can. What Elias did was to strengthen the floor of the roster significantly. The problem with the O's after all the pitching injuries is that we had become WAY TOO top heavy. Over the last 6 weeks, in games that Burnes or Rodriguez didn't start, we were often not competitive from a pitching perspective. Yes the offense has slumped as of late (in particular our best 2 hitters - Adley & Gunnar) but you cannot sustain winning surrendering 6 runs a game like we had been doing since the Bradish injury.

No we didn't make the sexy/splashy move that I and many others had hoped for, but we patched a lot of holes on a boat that was leaking badly. Just think about over the month of July all of the bad teams that we made look like world beaters because we couldn't pitch. We had way too many pitchers who simply aren't good Major Leaguers being counted on (or at least in roles that they have no business being in - like Kremer/Suarez as #3/4 starters or Perez as a 8th inning guy, etc.)

When you think about the fact that there were no difference making players who moved teams, I can't really blame Elias for acquiring one. Think about how MIA got a top 100 prospect for a guy in Tanner Scott who will be an FA in 2 months. IMO that is a serious overpay and would not have wanted to sell Kjerstad for what would have equated to pennies on the dollar. Yes, we traded away Norby and Stowers for an underwhelming return (as a side note I am very happy for both of them), but that was the cost of doing business yesterday, as the new Wild Card rules now favor sellers in a way that they can maximize leverage (since there are so few now).

Last thing, while we are not the clear favorite (like I wanted us to be) there is no team in the AL that scares me. And other than SEA and Philly who really has a better rotation? And next year, we should be a better team as we will have everyone back while adding Felix ... As long as we resign Burnes/Fried or another pitcher who can give us consistent performances like Burnes has this season. That guy has been everything anybody could have ever hoped or dreamed for!

Good post and always respect someone who has the ability to reconsider and readjust opinions. Sorry if I got a little spicy with you while things were popping off at the deadline. And not just because we're more in agreement now on the trades. I was thinking later that I was a bit caught up in the excitement of the deadline and probably went too hard, so my apologies and hopefully no hard feelings.

That was probably the wildest deadline the O's have ever been a part of in the modern era haha. And like Elias said to the media later, he will be haunted by some of the guys he gave up, and that's the game.

I wonder if the O's will sign him to an incentive laden 2 year deal.  It seems like Means knows how to pitch if his arm will hold up.  Maybe $3 mill/$7mill deal with incentives mostly in the 2nd year to make $7 or $8 mill more.

Trevor Rogers get not good news for the odds of John Means as a 2025-2026 Oriole.

No hard feelings. We may not always agree. But we are all O’s fans who want our team to win.

Lots of roster turnover for a first place team. By my count, 7 of 26 (27 percent), which seems quite high all at once.

This assumes as incoming: at least Holliday, L. Soto, and one of Jimenez/Pache/Slater; plus Dominguez, G. Soto, Rogers, Eflin.

Edited by now

Looking at the Marlins trade from the other side.   Your main acquisition is a 2B/LF who once played 3B in a summer league at 19 for 28 games and made 7 errors.   The Marlins are trying to convert Norby to 3B because Otto Lopez is a plus fielding 2B with a .565 OPS.

Stowers didn’t make a good first impression yesterday with 4 K in 4 AB.  I was impressed and intrigued that they had him batting third.   Better days to come, I’m sure.

I think this was a very good trade for the Orioles.   Even if Rogers is "only" a 5th starter next season, I think this was worth it for two guys that really didn't have a position to play in Baltimore.

Those three possible picks, plus our own first rd pick, plus we get a comp pick in rd B this year for being poor.  The being poor pick alternates between comp pick rds A and B each year.  Last year we traded our "being poor" pick for Burnes.
