I was wondering optimistically if the Eflin timing was for load management as well. Like, if we were in danger of missing the playoffs is it something he would have tried to pitch through. Grayson's injury seems a bit more serious but there might be a load management element there as well.

Eh this sounds like cope, I don’t think they’d shut down two of our best pitchers for “load management” in the middle of a division chase

It is. Plus spend cash on a few good old ones on their 5th TJ.  Get the rest off waivers and the rule 5. Throw in a few 15 year old lottery tickets from Latin America. Investing in young potential future pitching is as much a resource sink as buying a boat—but without getting to use the boat.

That works pretty well until the sea rises and you really, really need a boat.

Irvin starts tonight then you can DFA him and get a fresh arm if you need it and he struggles tonight.  If he pitches good probably hold on to him and wait for rosters to expand to add Efflin which just happens to be the day rosters expand.  I think Elias was playing chess again.  If they really needed him maybe they wait a few days and just push his start back instead since it seems he was basically ready after about a week to 10 days.

Yeah I doubt the O's would put 2 of their 3 best starters on the IL when their starting depth is already weak.  Then to add on top of it, our "ace" starts pitching like a AAAA retread.  Not what you want to do in the middle of a playoff race.

Plus the additional, possibly back-breaking burden it would place on an already strained bullpen.
