Keep in mind that the Guardians are starting Matt Boyd and Alex Cobb in the playoffs. Boyd was a NRI to ST. Cobb as a salary dump at the deadline. -

I agree, but I think the available player pool has shrunk now with the added wild cards and the amount of teams that are “contending”. The only teams clearly not contending next year is is the CWS and in the AL. The Angels always buy a little despite their losing. The Athletics won’t buy, but I dont think they’re selling unless overwhelmed. Only the Marlins and Rockies are rebuilding in the NL. So most of the teams that are selling have already traded their best assets. If we dip into FA, who actually has a better resume then Perez, and then would the FA contract be worth it? The more I think about it, Soto might not be back. He really only goes like 53-60 IP. At his price, we might look to just use the Norfolk shuttle and potentially develop a guy like McDermott or the other reliever type fringe prospects we have. But we’ll see what Elias does. I don’t think we pay for Soto if Hyde doesn’t trust him even with his end of the season low leverage run. -

This is a pessimistic take. Not wrong necessarily but glass half empty for sure. If I read this correctly, Bautista has a 67% chance of making back and pitching at his 2022-23 level. Once back, there is no injury risk independent of his normal aging profile. No guarantee but you could say the same thing about any pitcher we might sign on the market. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24705898/ Seranthony's 0.2 WAR was over two months. 0.6 WAR is pretty solid for a reliever. I would put him in the same reliability tier as Webb and just below Cano and Coulombe. So that makes potentially four above average with one elite arm. Soto was really good aside from a couple of early appearances. You have to look past those for the bull case but it's there. Akin had a tremendous year. There is a possible bull case for him too. So five guys who are likely above average with two guys who have upside and one spot for prospects that you assume are replacement level. I'd call that a strong bullpen.
