Kevin Youkilis managed all 12 defensive opportunities Sunday to set an American League record for first basemen with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage this season.

Youkilis didn't make an error in 1,079 total chances at first base, breaking the previous mark of .999 established by the Red Sox’ Stuffy McInnis in 1921. The only other qualifying first baseman ever to record a 1.000 fielding percentage was San Diego’s Steve Garvey, who had 1,319 total chances in 1984. Youkilis has made 1,586 consecutive defensive plays at first since his last error.

Dustin Pedroia finished the regular season with the highest batting average -- .3173 -- for a qualifying rookie second baseman since 1913.

Pedroia narrowly snuck past Pittsburgh's Jim Viox, who hit .3171 in 1913. Pedroia had .324 average with 10 doubles and 24 runs in his last 26 games to move past Viox.

I didnt realize that Youkilis was that good at 1B. Just, wow.

OK, that doesn't make any sense. If Pedroia had a higher average than Viox, he didn't have the highest average since 1913, he had the highest average since the last time a rookie 2B hit .3174 or higher. Did Pedroia set an actual record by having the highest average ever for a rookie 2B?

Pedroia did indeed set the record.

I believe it means that the record has been there since 1913.
