A look at the Orioles, by month

7.17 starters ERA for July! How brutal is that?

About as brutal as the fact that they averaged 4.79 IP per start. You absolutely cannot win when you are down several runs by the 4th/5th inning every single day, which is how it has been for this team.

A few notable points in that data:

1. Runs scored per game was the best month of the year (4.72) despite a subpar .730 OPS. The reason was that the RISP hitting was the best it's been since April. Cumulative RISP OPS went from .729 at the end of July to .745 at the end of August. For August, OPS with RISP was an estimated .803.

2. Even though the starters' ERA was terrible, we had more good starts in August than we've had in a while. Hence, the IP/start was pretty decent (5.78).

One run games were a killer...

...bullpen ERA though was a great except for Gregg's 7.20 ERA and 2 blown saves.

The O's blew 4 saves in August, but only two resulted in losses.

Aug. 8 -- J.J. blows a save for Guthrie, O's lose 6-5.

Aug. 10 -- Berken blows a save for Hunter, but O's win 6-4 in 10 innings.

Aug. 20 -- Gregg blows save in the bottom of the 12th, O's lose 9-8

Aug. 30 -- Gregg blows save for Guthrie in the bottom of the 9th, but O's win in the 10th, 6-5.

So you're saying it's all about the pitching??? Clearly you know nothing about baseball!
