Conclusion: Both the offense and pitching were subpar in May. The O's HR power returned, thanks mainly to Nelson Cruz who hit 13 of the Orioles' 37 HR this month. The O's pitchers actually did a good job of limiting opponents' homers, allowing only 26. Machado (.556 OPS) and Schoop (.527) really dragged down the offense and need to pick in June. The defense was pretty solid this month, and the fact that the O's allowed only 2 unearned runs in the month kept their RA in the middle of the pack even though the ERA was near the bottom. Overall, it was more of a pitchers' month around the league (3.86 league ERA for May compared to 4.14 in April).

Conclusion: The O's were pretty good in all facets of the game in June. It feels like the team could have done better than its 16-12 record. The team hit a ton of homers, but did not have a good BA/OBP with runners in scoring position. The pitching was pretty good until it hit a hiccup in the Tampa series (other than Tillman's good game).

Overall, three more months like June would have us in the playoff hunt down to the wire, but we didn't really take enough advantage of a pretty easy schedule, and didn't play well at home. Things will get harder from here.

I never did post our July numbers, so I'll do both July and August today

July 2014

17-8 record

5-2 vs. AL East

8-3 at home

9-5 on the road

6-1 in extra innings

7-5 in one run games

4.08 runs scored per game was 8th in the AL

.661 OPS was 14th in the AL

.286 OBP was last in the AL

.229 BA was last in the AL

.375 SLG was 12th in the AL

1.16 HR/game was 3rd in the AL

.234/.300/.431 with runners in scoring position (246 PA, 209 AB)

2.96 ERA was 3rd in the AL

1.07 HR allowed/game was 4th best in the AL

3.38 RA was 3rd in the AL

3.29 starters' ERA

2.34 bullpen ERA

6.03 IP per start

16 save opportunities was first in the AL

11 saves was 3rdin the AL

5 blown saves was 2nd most in the AL

6 unearned runs allowed was tied for 47h fewest in the AL

Conclusion (July): The hitting was weak, but timely in July. We were last in BA and OBP, below average in SLG, second worst in OPS, but somehow managed to be a respectable 8th in runs scored per game for the month. The pitching was awesome, both the starters (3.28 ERA and 6.04 IP/game) and the pen. The 6-1 record in extra innings really propelled this month. Looking back on this season, if we win the division, I think we'll all say that the West Coast road trip is what put us on that path.

Conclusion: Starting pitching carried the Orioles this September (2.45 ERA, 6.11 IP/start). The offense was pretty average, and the bullpen solid but not as good as in August. The big downer was the defense, which committed 23 errors leading to 12 unearned runs. Many of the errors came in garbage time at the end of the season, so I won't fret too much, but hopefully we start seeing the usual stellar defense in October (minus Manny's magic tricks, unfortunately).
