In other news...John Stockstill moved the location of the dirty photos of the Orioles Bird to another location:)

I sure hope this search committee speeds up. Byrnes is off the list and they said they will begin requesting permission to interview candidates tomorrow.

And PA is still in charge. So, the new GM can't pick his own manager, has to be a puppet to the manager and can't pick his own player development guy? Unreal.

I don't think he just signed for 2012, he was already signed for 2012, so nothing has changed there yet. They also said he could be reassigned somewhere else, I'm guessing it's up to the GM.

They said his current contract was set to expire December 31st:

Also, director of player development John Stockstill has received a contract for the 2012 season. His previous deal would have expired on Dec. 31. However, it's possible that he'll be reassigned within the organization.

You're right though, the bold part is the only silver lining here. Hopefully that's a signal to the prospective GM that no one's roles are set in stone here (except for Buck, obviously). They could have wanted to extend John to keep him around with all the movement on going right now, but made it clear his role could change depending on the new GM's preferences. This is also known as the incredibly naive and stupid rose colored glasses take on things.

I believe the article says that Stockstill will probably be reassigned. That he won't have a position until after they select a GM. If what Tony says is true, that Stockstill is a good baseball guy, I don't see the problem, as long as the new GM can appoint him to whatever position he likes. I want to know what happens with Dave.

No, it says its possible he will be re-assigned.

What was the rush to give him a contract for 2012 when his 2011 contract didn't expire until the end of the year? You have a totally unsettled FO and you keep this joke? Give me a break.

To any respectable GM candidate...RUN AWAY!!!!! This job will ruin you.

Okay, I'm looking for Tony's remarks now because I always get them confused... John is the competent one? If so, this is slightly better news. That said, I still don't like the concept of giving people extensions before a new boss is hired.

To ensure that he is kept with a job...done from above...way above.

Makes you wonder why Theo is taking the Cubs job. I guess he's not respectable either. And why do you think John Stockstill is a joke?

Remember, John had the same title with AM in Chicago...their MiL system wasn't really all that good either.

No reason for you to extend his contract right now.

This has PA written all over it and its a big problem.

You don't think the whole potential of re-assignment could be a good sign at all?

John joined the O's in 2005. Formerly the Scouting director for the Cubs. He became the head of the O's international scouting a year later and is responsible for what little progress we have made there since. He was appointed head of player development in 2010. His brother Dave had been head of player development since 2004 IIRC, but with the organization since the mid 90's. Dave is the one who is reputed to be close to PA.

    • Good stuff. The bullpen does do a good job of getting groundballs and Bradish, GRod and Burnes are not flyball heavy pitchers although obviously GROd and Bradish have only been out there so much since the start of 2023 and Burnes is just 2024.  Still, they have kept those numbers down.
    • I twisted something and included Cohen.  That's my bad.  And I agree with almost all of this.  My post was more on tying the uber wealth of current ownership to simply having the ability to spend to any level.  The Orioles ownership group is one of the most powerful in all of sports.  I think they will make the Orioles more profitable and I think those profits will be reinvested in a way previous ownership did not. I do not anticipate, but would wildly applaud, ownership funding talent/salary increases out of pocket.  Thanks for the well articulated response.
    • Or another drop-off. Which is more likely at 37?
    • I don’t think we have heard that at all. I believe Elias said that Mateo should be a full go for ST. If what you are saying is accurate, I would agree it’s not worth keeping him around. I just don’t think it’s accurate.
    • Mateo is going to llikely miss the first part of the year and then be limited for much of the year d/t his elbow injury.  I think he won't be able to do much more than DH the early part of the year.  Is he worth signing just for 2025.  Imo, if the O's bring him back, it should be for 2 years.  It could be that Mateo is the backup 1B to Mayo, don't laugh.
    • His statcast page is really good though. He could be a candidate for a bounce back and will likely be a relatively cheap signing. I don’t love the fit but I can see the justification for doing it.
    • Mathematically I'm sure they will get better just because they have been so bad against the pass so far this year I can't imagine it getting much worse. I'm not so sure they will take a step forward against the team that has scored the most points in the whole NFL next Sunday though.   😬 Our best defensive game so far was against Josh Allen and the Bills though so I guess anything is possible.  You would think we would be able to come up with some schemes to confuse a rookie QB.
