The Phillies aren't playing for theoretical value. They are playing for world championships and they have a need Beltran fills.

They have a payroll ceiling, they're not the Yanks. Especially when they give guys like Howard huge, unreasonable contracts he won't even come close to earning. You can almost guarantee they'll pay more attention to value for their dollars going forward.

It is easy for me to imagine the Philies falling off a cliff the next couple of years. Their entire starting lineup, except Hunter Pence, is over 30 years old. They have $110 mm committed to payroll next year and they have to re-sign or replace Rollins, Oswalt (option), Lidge (option) and Ibanez, among others, and they may need to lock up Hamels, who is in his 3rd year of arbtiration eligibility. They have Halladay and Lee tied up for a few years so they probably won't fall to being a bad team, but it may be downhill from here.

Will the Red Sox pursue Rollins?

They could but they think Iglesias could be their SS of the future and he will be ready soon.

I know the glove is great, but that's some remarkable optimism.

Could you imagine the 500-page discussions here if the O's were going into 2012 relying on a shortstop with a supposedly great glove but a .554 OPS in AAA?

Actually, since the OldGuy and Shack are gone, it might only be 50-page discussions, as they were the main advocates of Luis Hernandez...
