MLB Network discusses Fielder to Nationals

They lose the 50 million if they can't sign him, really? Had no idea it went that way....my guess is that the Rangers definitely work something out then...no way they can let that much cash go to waste. Can they?

Pretty sure that's how it works. 50 Million just for the rights to negotiate...if they don't sign him, I don't imagine they get that 50 million back.

I am on the "I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be pumped if we signed him regardless of whether or not it's smart" side of things. However, this is very different from Trea's "I'm not going to be a fan if we don't sign him". You have to be realistic. Sure, it'd be fun. That's where I'm at. If it doesn't happen, well, it was never going to happen in the first place, right?

Sounds about right. My expectations of a big signing like this are so low that it will not phase me at all if (when?) he signs with another team. But, man it would be fun to see him aiming for the warehouse on a regular basis.

Trea is committed to his positions or is that he should be committed? Just kidding...

Texas doesn't have to pay the posting fee if he doesn't sign, if I remember correctly.

EDIT: Wikipedia

The fee is returned if he doesn't sign.
The posting fee is refunded if a contract isn't worked out.

Makes sense, why would any team ever get involved if there was a chance of completely losing the money. Not to mention the temptation of collusion between the player and the Japanese team.

My goodness, I can't imagine paying 50 million just for the rights to negotiate with a ballplayer and not having him suiting up for my team next year. 50 mill down the drain.
Hardly. They get the money back, and can spend it on Fielder, and EJax, Oswalt or Kuroda. That might be even better.

I've always had this weird thought that Darvish would just say "screw it" and go back to Japan. I don't know why. Just a hunch.
I think Darvish will settle for 6/60 M. That would put him well above Dice K and too reasonable a contract for him to turn down and still hold his head up when he goes back to Japan.

99% chance Nats don't sign Fielder says one guy, FWIW.

I'm not saying the market is collapsing, but... I'm sayin'. :scratchchinhmm:

I'm far from predicting that we'll sign the man. I'd still put the chances at slim to none. However, if there was ever a chance, it would probably involve an offseason just like this.

Any or all of this speculation could be coming from Boras.

I doubt Boras would put out speculation that there is a 99% chance a team won't sign his client. Unless Boras is getting so desperate, he is turning to reverse psychology? Hoping the Nat's office actually puffs out there collective chests and screams we are too going to sign him!...ha.

Gives TEX comfort that if Darvish falls through Fielder will be there to scoop up.

Why does everyone say it makes perfect sense for Washington to sign Prince and a horrible idea for the O's? This is the perfect storm the Orioles need to actually get a top free agent without competition from any of the evil empires. Normally we would have to overbid and still not get the guy. Now we can give an 8 year 200 offer and we have him (maybe even 6 at 150). The issues of weight and defense are not nearly as important in the American League as it would be for the Nats. What better way to get excitement back in time for the snoozefest that will be the Orioles Fan Fest in the next week. Why is this such a tough decision? When can we have hope of winning?

Per Rotoworld...Yanks met with Boras to discuss Edwin Jackson...yeah right, I'm sure they are talking about more than just EJax.

Signing Prince would break the luxury tax threshold. It's been repeated multiple times.

The Yankees are sick of paying huge penalties. By avoiding the tax now, they can go after Joey Votto after 2013...

    • As of today, we have 3 lefties in the OF. He will have plenty of at bats here.  I wouldn't start him everyday persay but 350-450 at bats will be fine.
    • For me, he’d be the 4th outfielder so he’d likely have to do both. He could spell all three of Mullins/Cowser/Kjerstad at any given time. I would argue positionally a RH OF might be out biggest need in fact, so if not O’Neil, someone else of that ilk.
    • I would consider adding Tommy Pham in our McKenna/Slater role......he's a better bat and it pretty much guarantees that we'll be in the playoffs again.  He always gets there. Yes, I'm serious.
    • Alonso would be the worst possible signing for us. All he does is hit for power, and even that might be waning, even before you stick him in Oriole Park with that LF wall. That is the hardest of passes.    Martinez is very meh. That dude is going to fall off a cliff at some point soon, I’d rather it not be while the Os are paying him.    Could get on board with O’Neill for sure, if the price is reasonable. Major upgrade over the Slater/Hays combo from 2024, if he could stay healthy.
    • So, you would be okay putting him in left field, or a you thinking of him platooning in right with Kjerstad?
    • A lot of good stuff here: https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/10/07/mlb-orioles-rubenstein I particularly like the following quote: “I’ve written some big checks for Carlyle over the years, so we’ve put alot of money into deals and it’s not like I’m going to have a shock at the size of the dollars that might be involved,” he said. “The trick is getting the opportunity to do that.”
    • Lot of great crowds at these games so far in fact (throwing stuff onto the field notwithstanding). Yankees crowd I must begrudgingly admit was pretty raucous you could hear drum beats, maybe the occasional horn, in addition to their usual annoying chanting and sound effects. Phillies always have great crowds. SD and LA turning it up a notch. Detroit and Mets and KC will almost certainly add to that list shortly. Makes it that much more fun to watch.
