O's will probably make a trade at the meetings

Not sure about Upton or Butler. Francouer is more a possibility based on what happens with McLouth. Also heard perhaps the Braves . Anyone for our good friend Prado.

I guess we might here 30- names and perhaps end up with one. I think they make a bigger splash then Eveland.

I almost jokingly made a comment about Franceour. They're looking for OBP, why go after him?

I like the idea of Hosmer the most but I find it hard to believe that KC is going to give up on him at his age and contract. Butler seems like the most likely fit. I also like the idea of Smoak. Getting him out of Seattle I think would do him wonders and probably wouldn't cost as much as Butler.

Neither Morneau, Hosmer, nor Morse posted WAR's over 1 last year, and Morse and Morneau are on the wrong side of 30. They'd be a significant downgrade from Reynolds in all aspects of the game. Hosmer and Butler have some pros but also come with terrible first base defense and Hosmer had a pretty nasty sophomore slump last year. Moreover, each would be overvalued by KC because Hosmer was seen as a future cornerstone and butler is a fan favorite.

That would be a huge mistake. Trading Hammel and Tillman both.

I'd trade Hammel + Matusz in a deal for Butler. KC would need a decent amount more I would think.

Why? I think you are over-valuing Butler here. KC really wants to cut salary. Butler represents a large chunk of their budget. He is a DH only. His is production is worth more than his salary, but his salary hamstrings KC a bit in their efforts to do other things. That is what makes a trade between KC and the O's involving Butler a good fit, IMO. It is a potential win-win. If the Royals want to cut payroll to be able to afford Lester or Price in another trade, selling a bit low on Butler makes some sense. Another possibility might be Hosmer, but I think the Royals would want any team trading for Hosmer to also take back Chen or Hochevar to help them payroll-wise. They would have no reason to move Hosmer otherwise, IMO.

I'm not sure the hesitation on not trading a pitcher. Once Bundy/Gausman come through someone down the road will be the odd man out anyway

Could just be Hammel leaving and having Tillman-Chen-Gonzo-Bundy-Gausman.

We have some movement to trade pitching. But it has to be the right deal, and we need to fill those young pitchers spots with some depth in AAA if we do move them.

If we trade a SP, signing Saunders becomes a much bigger priority.

I don't think that there is any way that Gausman breaks camp with the Orioles. He's got less than half of a year of MiLB experience.

I am only hesitant on trading Tillman. Matusz and Arrieta can go for all I care.

It's a classic case of selling high. Tillman (along with his buddies Bergy and Berken) had zero value last winter. Amazing how perceptions have changed. There's always the possibility that Matusz and Arrieta get it turned around this year and become the Tillman of 2013.

If the O's are going to contend in 2013 they need to have enough starting pitching until Bundy/Gausman arrive. Also there is not guarantee that Bundy/Gausman have immediate success.

Ill say this for the gigillionith time. Tillman is more important to the Orioles than Eric Hosmer will ever be. If we trade Tillman for Hosmer we will regret it. He just isnt that great a player, and Tillman is on his way to being special. I hope the Orioles dont dare do this.

I won't disagree with this. It would certainly be a bold move.

I would certainly think that Buck wants to keep Tillman around.

    • This is it right here. The ideal scenario.
    • Definitely don't want Soto back.  I'm on the fence w/ Dominguez. I guess he's a fine hedge in the event that Felix isn't effective from the jump.  I don't want Rogers on this roster. As said before, I want an open competition for the 5th spot between Suarez, Povich, McDermott, Rogers. If Suarez doesn't make the rotation, he goes into the bullpen. Povich/McDermott/Rogers all have options. If I had it my way, here's what the 13 pitcher breakdown would be: SP1: Free Agent Signing (Snell, Burnes, Fried, etc.) SP2: Eflin SP3: Grayson SP4: Kremer SP5: Free Agent Signing and/or competition w/ Suarez, McDermott, Rogers, Povich Closer: Felix High Leverage: Coulombe High Leverage: Free Agent Signing Middle Reliever: Free Agent Signing *or* Dominguez Middle Reliever: Cano Middle Reliever: Webb Middle Reliever: Akin Middle/Long Reliever: Suarez I'd like to see this club sign a SP1, SP5, a high leverage arm and a reliable middle reliever type..
    • Have you not noticed, Frobby is not among us and I don't blame him one bit. Has been absent since last Wednesday evening.  By the way, I long lost track of any point and particularly relevance this discussion has to Burnes and 400 million.  Seems we are revisiting a lot of he should have - they could of - why can't we now. Great tangent though! Again, for the record, I believe no one is going to give Burnes anything close to 400 million. So my answer to the OP is again - No One!!!!
    • This posts wreaks of someone who has no idea what the cost of relievers are nowadays. Which is, of course, no surprise that you aren’t informed. Now that said, I don’t have an issue if you take someone out..I asked that very question. Who do you take out or what do you not acquire in favor of keeping Suarez?
    • You always have room for another high leverage guy.  And Akin has an option left according to FG.
    • Yea.  I feel the same way.  I really do not care strongly one way or another.  Sure, I think it's kind of ugly.  I also think HR's came pretty cheap before.  I like the exciting defensive plays it fosters and of course the random triple & odd carom make for some fun and unique moments.  But I don't think it helps or hurts the team in any substantial way short of helping out the pitching a little.   I sure don't think the players are changing their approaches.  If they keep it as is, that's fine with me.  If they modify it some way, that's fine with me as well.  It does seem like there is some opportunity for some unique seats down there by modifying it slightly.  When I first saw it, it almost appeared like a construction Phase 1.  That might be reasoning for pushing it back so far, allows them some flexibility in the future.   I also don't buy that a Free Agent RH hitter is going to care at all about the wall.   They are getting paid regardless.  I'd think that 1-maximizing payday 2-playing for a winner 3-finding a location that suits your family would be your priorities and your long-term stat line would be very close to the bottom of your list of concerns.
