Arrieta up to take Gausman's spot

More than likely he won't get into the game. I would think that most of the relievers used last night are available. Maybe not Matusz and I'm sure they'd want to stay away from Hunter if possible.

Have to imagine that Hunter, Patton, and O'Day won't be available. I'm fine with Matusz pitching as long as he doesn't face righties because then bad things tend to happen.

I would think Patton is unavailable also. He pitched 1.2 innings on Wednesday and faced another 2 batters last night.

On the other hand I believe that O'Day had had 2 days off so he might be able to give us an inning - if he could stop having 9-pitch at-bats.

Maybe we'll see Britton on Sunday if Gonzalez goes out on paternity leave. Gausman would need more rest to take that start. I hope they wouldn't let Arrieta take it.

Gausman has to be recalled when Gonzo goes on the paternity list if he is going to be recalled within the next 10 days.

Yes, but if Gonzalez has to go on the PL on Sunday, Gausman isn't an option to start that game. So it would have to be Britton, Arrieta, or someone else from Norfolk. Then Gausman would just wait until his 10 days are up or there's an injury.

This is the right move for a number of reasons, some of them procedural .Plus Jake could be a good option in many situations IF

he can throw strikes. And, its not likely he will be here for long anyway.

I disagree. Jake is a possible option as a mop up guy since McF was extended last night. I never want to see him in a leverage situation

I am pretty sure they don't pitch Britton many innings to day. If Gonzo goes on PL Sun. they'll bring him up. No way they start Arrieta, if they are in their right minds.

Totally the right move. Arrieta dominates Boston.

Err, ah, maybe not. :eektf:

Actually, I am fine with this. We need a guy in the pen that can go multiple innings. I would rather Britton stay down to get straightened out as a starter. I have pretty much given up on Arrieta as a starter.

Assuming Gonzalez makes it through Sunday without his wife going into labor, everything should work out. Worst case scenario, we could just put Casilla on the DL.

The worst thing that could happen was if Miggy's wife goes into labor before Sunday then we would have to use Britton on Sunday and then couldn't bring Gausman up for his start and have to go with Arrieta, Stinston or Wada.

Yep. Jake was on the 40-man, can be used tonight, and is here in case we get deep into the bullpen tonight or given the situation, to eat innings in order to rest the other bullpen guys. When we need a starter, it is likely Britton or even Gausman is Gonzalez is out on paternity leave next Tuesday. It really is not a big deal.

Plus you know, Jake is not some absolute lost cause who is sure to blow a game the second he gets in (then again neither is Strop and that hasn't stopped some from acting that way).

    • It may be just me, but I don't think you have to go to the game threads to find funny. Hell, some of the OP's are funny but then that's just me and my sense of humor.
    • Was going to say this afternoon that I would try moving Gunnar back to the leadoff role, just to try to recapture a bit of that magic.  I don’t think there’s a ton of correlation here, but he was at a .942 OPS as a leadoff hitter and only .742 as a #3 hitter. It’s possible that even if it actually means nothing, Gunnar may perceive it as sort of a reset and take a little extra confidence and clearmindedness to the plate.  I think it’s worth a shot. The batting order position doesn’t matter much — unless the player himself happens to believe it matters a lot.

In his limited play at first base, Mayo took well to the position and looks to be a legitimate option there, though he would waste his plus plus arm.  He’s an average to slightly below average runner so he’s not base clogger, but he will slow with age due to his size. He’s athletic enough and moves well once he get going." https://orioleshangout.com/2023/11/16/orioles-2023-3-prospect-coby-mayo-3b/ I don't think the athleticism is the question. He's a 40-45 runner. That is average to slightly below average. Is he faster or more nimble than Santander or O'Hearn? I don't know. Given the fact that 3B seems to have a very good young player as the incumbent and Mayo appears to have an arm that could be quite a weapon in the OF, can the O's live with a little less foot speed in RF? I think it's worth finding out if he can play there.
    • When your offense stinks and you can’t score runs, you do things that you might not do ordinarily.
    • Mountcastle had no feel for the outfield. He took terrible routes, showed no knack for playing the ball off the wall and didn’t know which base to throw the ball to. Acting like it was an athleticism thing is disingenuous.
    • We have plenty of guys on the injured list. I suppose for me it's a question of whether you want Bowman or Young eligible for the postseason
    • What does a first baseman have to do that Mayo does poorly? Stretch, catch, including managing awkward throws in the dirt, and what else exactly? Reflexes, throwing quick and accurate are skills for any position. What is unique to 1B that Mayo can’t do? And if he can’t play first, where the job is stand and catch, where CAN he play?
