Bottom line we need a real closer.

Or the correlation between 80% GB rate and save rate.

So you are at least admitting that there probably is a correlation between SO % and save rate?

And I'd be willing to grant that guys that have a 80% GB rate, probably do well. But very few guys do because it isn't sustainable. Even if it is from your individual performance rate, the turnover in defense would change that. When we have a new SS next year, would you rather Britton strike out more batters, or keep having him rely on the non-Hardy out there? If Britton pitched for the Yankees, would you rather him strike out more batters, or be relying on Jeter and Roberts to make the plays on the ground balls?

Yeah, they may be tied for 2nd in blown saves, , but they are middle of the pack in save percentage. So the closer isnt really a big issue here.

The big issue here is that the team has a 5.2 ERA in the 7th inning (worst of all innings) whereas the 8th and 9th innings are the two best innings. Obviously our best guys are going in this spot.

We need to find someone to fill in that spot there.

Of course. See the post above.

Koji Uehara

6/22/14 @ OAK: 2 IP, 2 ER, 2 HR, BS (Scavenged a W, however)

7/10/14 vs CWS: 1 IP, 2 ER, 1 HR, BS

Happens to everybody. Even supposedly infallible 39 year old closers with injury problems, who you'd have to give a boatload of prospects to your division rival to get.

Of course. See the post above.

And I've also acknowledged that. I've said, if we are going to have a closer, Britton is the best option of what we got.

We just shouldn't have a closer, but should instead keep playing match up baseball until the game is over. Britton should not have been pitching to a guy that destroys lefties.

And people shouldn't be shocked that a guy that pitches to contact, has singles fall in.

How can that be??? If we had a "strikeout" pitcher for a closer we'd never lose games.

Kimbrel has 34 save opportunity. Britton has blown 3 in 18 Huge red flag.

Aroldis Chapman has an 18.2 K/9 and has blown 2 saves (same # as Britton).

Dude got nailed in the head 1 of those came when he was just coming back. Chapman is 21 for 23 Britton 15 for 18.

Your still going to lose games like this playing "matchup."

And I think the reason they don't do it is because the players prefer and perform better with defined roles.

    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.

    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
