OK. Even if you take that stance, if he signs during the negotiating window for market value, it can't be with another team. As I said before, that wouldn't have been possible without the trade.

Yea thank god we had that window with Nick and Cruz this offseason without it we would never have convinced them to stay.

I hate when people say "Well, you are only so many games from a wildcard, so you have to go for it, right?". To me the answer there is and should be "it depends". The O's are just 2 games back of that

I'd rather watch Gausman, Ubaldo, Gonzo, Tillman, and a sweet free agent starter that we sign in the offseason. We'll see about Davies.
I don't even view Davies as a viable member of the rotation. I just see him as a guy that can pitch at AAA and if the O's need a sport starter for a day or a month they can bring him up.

Right. He's your sixth guy, so you don't have to tear your hair out when one of your starters inevitably goes down with an injury. And that's more or less what he already is. It's quite possible he becomes a legitimate back end starter, but he doesn't have to be that in order to be more valuable than a marginal upgrade of Parra over Snider.

Not likely. But the difference between the wildcard and no wildcard is likely a game or two in the standings. Parra may well be worth a couple wins over Snider, Reimold, etc. Of course there's an untold number of interdependent variables here, so it's impossible to assign direct credit and blame for the players on teams around that wildcard threshold.

I think developing prospective #4 starters in order to trade them at the deadline is a defensible strategy. Maybe he catches on right away in the big leagues, or, maybe it takes him three years to figure it out. I don't see the O's giving a guy three years to figure out how to be a #4. You trade for that guy or find him on a field in Mexico (like Miguel Gonzalez). So, I'm not all upset about giving up Davies. Whether or not Parra is the right guy we will have to see.

I don't think Parra is marginal upgrade. I think he's filling in a hole at lead off, moving Chris Davis back to 1B, and removing a ton of at bats from Snyder and Reimold. Will it get us to the playoffs? Maybe, we were already headed that way. Was Davies too much? That depends on what you think Davies' ceiling is and whether you think the Orioles will need him anyway. It also depends if you think his pitching will play in the majors. If we go to the playoffs and Davies doesn't do anything with his career, did we win?

      Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.

      You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.

      So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???

      The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.

      Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
