Are we really happy keeping DD?

We need a GM who can build an organization from the ground up, lead a re-build.

Is that anywhere on DD's resume?

I don't think so.

Short answer re keeping DD: yes.....unfortunately

Long answer: Hell yes....he's destroyed the team & the farm system....let's see if he can keep it up

Context: Rebuilding ain't happening.....neither is being relevant for the next 8-10 years

I don't know why he stayed away for so many years, I guess it was to get back at Boston for banishing him before 2004, when that was mostly his team that won.

I don't think it was his choice to stay away, quite the opposite. I looked for the articles I read at the time and only found this:

Duquette was out of MLB between being let go by the Bosox in 2002 and finally being hired by the Orioles, ahead of Jays' current assistant GM Tony LaCava. Fact is, he had been available for anyone to hire, including the Jays - attending every winter meetings in that time as a job seeker, usually sitting alone in hallways and lobbies as disinterested execs passed by. Now, after three years with the O’s and two appearances in the playoffs, after 96 wins in 2015 his star is on the rise.

Cause everyone thought that the Sawx were Theo Espien's team at that time, and around 2007, a good chunk of it was, but most of those players were still over because of Duquette.

Dragged kicking and screaming out of retirement? Do you have any evidence for this nonsense?

OK, it wasn't kicking and screaming, but I remembered reading about him being out of baseball for 9-10 years, and turning down other offers. That's what stuck in my head. Here's a good article describing what happened to Dan Duquette.

And Crazy silver03 - you hit me with a negative rep for asking a question? Don't you think that was kind of a kneeJERK reaction?

Yeah, he was epically screwed, no wonder he stayed out. Inherited a meh situation in Baltimore and ran with it

After the Orioles performance this year I think he would be out of the running regardless. Let's face it, GM's who take their team from first to a likely last place finish in their division aren't exactly hot commodities.

Good, let other teams make their hires based on the noise superimposed on the signal.

I think the Orioles overplayed their hand this winter. They should have just taken a prospect and hired Brady.

That's not a knock on Duquette. I think he has done a very good job so far for the most part. Our farm system is not looking too hot these days and a high-end prospect would make me feel a whole lot better about all the injuries and ineffectiveness.

This is a lateral move, so it's curious Cleveland let him go so easily. It's hard to believe he had been in Cleveland for 24 years. His father Ron was the agent for Cal Ripken, Jim Palmer, and Eddie Murray.

The owner of the Indians has put a minority stake up for sale. Maybe that played into it.

Playoffs two out of four years in the context of a team that hadn't been anything like relevant in almost 15 years. I shudder to imagine your assessment if they'd just continued on the path they had been pre-Duquette. How has a team that's won, what, 55% of their games the last four years on the heels of 14 years of losing been "destroyed"?

    • I thought Chisholm missed home too. They didn’t appeal tho I don’t think.
    • Now run scores and Yanks take lead.
    • Inexcusable missed call in NY. Review Cleo at showed Chisholm out at 2nd. They upheld safe call.
    • Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...
    • First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.
    • Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
    • If the franchise were better, the fan base would be too.  It’s been a rough 40 years.
