Offseason Rumors and Deals Around MLB

I never heard of Chris Davis not liking the OF. Also, I'm sure Scott Boras is talking up his versatility of being able to play multiple positions to get more money rather than telling teams he insists on playing 1B only.

He's a slightly below average RF from what I've seen. The more he plays there likely the better he would do. For one year I don't see a problem with it.

I am sure he is selling versatility. I am just as sure he would prefer first base. If he had a choice, with similar money and one was RF and the other 1B, I firmly believe he would choose 1B team.

If we sign Davis or Alvarez to go along with Kim and Wieters as lefties in the lineup, I think we'll be fine.

Wieters is not that good from the left side though (.713 OPS vs RHP, .821 vs LHP). We've got several pure righties with better splits than that. We'll probably be fine, but could use that extra left handed option IMO. Right now, that's Paredes who last season split .740 vs RHP and .651 vs LHP as a switch hitter. Not much better than Wieters vs RHP you can say, but better, and another option.

1B .730

2B .729

3B .805

SS .593

LF Kim ?

CF .795

RF Reimold .760

I don't know about you but it looks to me we need to upgrade at more than one position v RHP

If you think Buck is sitting MW based on his splits you've got another thing coming.

Um, he's catching. No he's not sitting based on splits, he's sitting when he needs a break. Paredes doesn't catch - OF/1B/DH we're talking about as another option. Kim, Davis/Alvarez/whatever, Wieters and another LH/SH in the same lineup. So we're talking about Reimold/Hoes or even Trumbo sometimes sitting.

It isn't uncommon for switch hitter to switch dominant sides during their career.

I'm not sure what numbers those are supposed to be, but I don't think they prove anything. They certainly don't reflect adding Davis or Alvarez, which is what I said in the post you quoted. Put enough good hitters in the lineup and they will score runs.

Just for fun here's the same players vs LHP:

C .821

1B .824

2B .555 (wow)

3B .744

SS .763

LF Kim ?

CF .745

RF .757

DH .510 <--- platooned

It's actually pretty even looking right now.

Davis - .875 vs RHP, .742 vs LHP

Alvarez - .794 vs RHP, .601 vs LHP

Except we face RHP 2-3 times as much.

    • As of today, we have 3 lefties in the OF. He will have plenty of at bats here.  I wouldn't start him everyday persay but 350-450 at bats will be fine.
    • For me, he’d be the 4th outfielder so he’d likely have to do both. He could spell all three of Mullins/Cowser/Kjerstad at any given time. I would argue positionally a RH OF might be out biggest need in fact, so if not O’Neil, someone else of that ilk.
    • I would consider adding Tommy Pham in our McKenna/Slater role......he's a better bat and it pretty much guarantees that we'll be in the playoffs again.  He always gets there. Yes, I'm serious.
    • Alonso would be the worst possible signing for us. All he does is hit for power, and even that might be waning, even before you stick him in Oriole Park with that LF wall. That is the hardest of passes.    Martinez is very meh. That dude is going to fall off a cliff at some point soon, I’d rather it not be while the Os are paying him.    Could get on board with O’Neill for sure, if the price is reasonable. Major upgrade over the Slater/Hays combo from 2024, if he could stay healthy.
    • So, you would be okay putting him in left field, or a you thinking of him platooning in right with Kjerstad?
    • A lot of good stuff here: https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/10/07/mlb-orioles-rubenstein I particularly like the following quote: “I’ve written some big checks for Carlyle over the years, so we’ve put alot of money into deals and it’s not like I’m going to have a shock at the size of the dollars that might be involved,” he said. “The trick is getting the opportunity to do that.”
    • Lot of great crowds at these games so far in fact (throwing stuff onto the field notwithstanding). Yankees crowd I must begrudgingly admit was pretty raucous you could hear drum beats, maybe the occasional horn, in addition to their usual annoying chanting and sound effects. Phillies always have great crowds. SD and LA turning it up a notch. Detroit and Mets and KC will almost certainly add to that list shortly. Makes it that much more fun to watch.
