How does one mistake = three runs?

Well base runners are going to happen for any starter. Keeping runs off the board is most important. He was very close to going 6 scoreless, one swing of the bat ended that. Just my outlook.

I don't think walks or singles should really be classified as a mistake. Usually that's reserved for extra base hits, IMO.

Yea, I think allowing two baserunners than giving up a three run bomb should count as more than one mistake.

So if a pitcher gives up seven straight singles than he didn't make a mistake?

Sometimes hitters hit good pitches. Not all home runs are a mistake by the pitcher. Some singles are bad mistakes by the pitcher. Some outs are bad mistakes by the pitcher.

If he was mistake free than obviously they must have reached base on errors.

Like I just said I don't think allowing two base runners than giving up a three run bomb is "one mistake".

Buck left him in too long and he got hit.

If your objective is to shut them out, maybe he did leave him in too long. But, if your objective is to save a little pen for tomorrow with a seven run lead, maybe not.

Don't be obtuse, of course there will be a few mistakes in 7 straight singles. But you can lick your way into a single or be helped by a tight zone. XBH's seem to most often come on "mistake" pitches.

Which means saying something like "He only made one mistake." is pretty silly.

Right?
