Don't get me wrong, career numbers shouldn't be ignored completely. But, when dealing with a player on the wrong side of 30, I tend to gravitate more towards what they are doing now versus what they accomplished in their baseball prime. I think what Slater had done this year more accurately reflects what to expect from him in the playoffs than what he accomplished is the more distant past. -

No Gunnar, Cowser, Westburg, or Mullins. Bowman as the opener. Was hoping Cowser could hit another HR or two this weekend to nail down the ROY. -

Not sure what you mean by that? How do you mean flawed? It measures something and it's very upfront about what it measures and how it measures it. I don't know why anyone would "believe it blindly", it's one tool. -

Adley catching is a bit of a head scratcher to me. Maybe that happens because they moved the game to a night game. Holliday batting lead off is something we see long term I hope. Cowser loses 4 at bats in race for ROY. -
Another possibility is that "BABIP" is a flawed statistics. I am not saying it is, just pointing out that you can't believe it blindly. -

You could say the same about this year though. Fans are buying into 2024 full year numbers that favor Cowser, then they were fooled by the bait and switch that has been Slater’s better performance over the last two months. I don’t believe it is best practice or empirically-justified to ignore prior year metrics. Players like Mullins or Trea Turner will sometimes struggle for months before reverting to stats closer to career averages.
