I think Gausman was fine tonight. He had trouble putting the Astros down with 2 out and gave up some gophers...but Im satisfied.

Only because we have 12. If we had 3, KG's performance would not feel fine probably.

If Gausman gives up 3 runs over 6 or 7 innings but the Orioles lose, then it's because Gausman "Piitches just good enough to lose."

If the Orioles score a bunch of runs while Gausman is on the mound, and he and the team win the game comfortably, then his effort was only good enough because of the offense.

He gets criticized when the offense doesn't score, and he gets criticized if the offense DOES score, but he doesn't pitch a gem.

Those are pretty high standard to be judged by.

I'm judging him by the HRs and hard hit balls he gave up tonight. It wasn't his greatest performance. Not awful, but certainly not great.

And I didn't imply that he was great tonight.

But I don't have a problem with the starting pitcher giving up a solo home run when the team is up by a score of 7-2, or giving up a 2-run home run when the team is up by a score of 12-3 ...... particularly when he managed to go 6.67 innings with the huge lead that he had, and only walked 1 batter in those 6.67 innings with that big lead.

Tonight was a rare game in which the Orioles' offense exploded while Gausman was pitching. And if he is going to get criticized for not pitching well enough to win in a low-scoring game, then I also think that he should be given credit for pitching well enough to win in a high-scoring game.

From what I've seen, his approaches to the ball look worse than the actual results--looks unsure, takes too many steps and changes of in his angle of approach, but then catches the ball anyway. And his throws have been fine. Maybe with proper instruction and practice, he could learn more direct paths to the ball.

I'm very conservative when it comes to signing guys over 30. (and Kim would be 30)
