Gallardo has a 3.38 ERA in August with only two home runs allowed, but struggled against Houston allowing 10 base runners in seven innings allowing four runs with thre being earned. Before that, he allowed nine base runners in five innings with three earned runs allowed. His numbers against the Yankees aren't good, but much better at Yankee Stadium.

Cessa has been up and down this season for the Yankees and made his only start of the season in his last appearance. He threw six shutout innings of three hit ball against the Angels. He wasn't a highly rated prospect in the Yankees system, but he pitched to a 3.03 (1.15) in 77.1 innings at AAA this season with 69 strikeouts and eight home runs allowed.

Scherzer was just like you thought he would be trying to end a losing streak for his team: dominant. Jimenez pitched well and really not that surprising to me considering his numbers at Nationals Park, but was outpitched by Scherzer which is also no surprise. The game was 1-0 in the eighth before the Orioles bullpen inevitably collapses again this time at the hands of Ondrusek and Wright with three more runs allowed and the Orioles get shutout in the three hitter.

The Yankees have some of the best pitching in the AL over the last week and have a better bullpen than the Orioles with all three categories being top three in the AL. Meanwhile, the Orioles are dead last across the board in the last week and are bottom fourth in the league in starting pitching. The Orioles bullpen continues to be overrated (as far as being the best in the AL) being more middle of the pack than anything else and really has been all season. The Orioles do have the best relief pitcher in baseball for sure though and Brach was among the best in the first half of the season which makes the bullpen extremely top heavy.

The good thing is the Orioles have been hitting again, but so have the Yankees. They don't have the same type of offense the Orioles have of course, but they are scoring runs and their pitching has turned it up. It's always a tough series against the Yankees and right now, they are better than they've been all season long and are hungry. This could be a tough series. The Yankees dealt their best players for youth which is exactly what the Orioles need to do this offseason and look how exciting that team is. They are set up nicely for the future and the Orioles will be as well if they do what's best for the team long term. It wouldn't take long for people to forget all about the guys we would be trading, either. There'd be far too much to look forward to and no need to look back.

Gallardo is enjoying his best month of the season by far while Cessa is an unknown who is suddenly an important part of NY's playoff push with his last start. He was enjoying his best year at AAA by far and his first ever MLB start was a good one, but had mixed results out of the bullpen.

Toronto and Boston both lose with J.A. Happ giving up four runs in the fifth inning after four scoreless which was more than all the Angels needed to win and Boston loses another one run game despite Pomeranz pitching well for them since being acquired. The Tigers are coming on strong despite all their injuries and have won four in a row closing to two back of the Orioles with KC also winning to gain a game. Seattle is playing the White Sox and blew a three run lead in the seventh inning and are in a 6-6 tie heading to the bottom of the eighth. I'll update the standings depending on the outcome. The outcome is Seattle blew a 6-3 lead in the last three innings and gave up a walk off RBI single to Todd Frazier to complete the choke. It's amazing how many leads the M's blow.

Was still driving home from work during the top of the first, and two notes from the radio broadcast:

1) Wow, Manny's HR sounded great, when I heard the crack of the bat I was thinking HR before Joe Angel had a chance today a word.

2) The IronBirds are advertising a promotion where they wear uniforms of the Baltimore Elite Giants Negro League team. Someone needs to tell them that regardless of how it's spelled, it is pronounced E-Light.
