Figured we needed one of these to track where our draft pick is.  Hopefully it keeps going higher as other teams sign Q.O. offer guys and we don't.  Also the competitive balance lottery is slated for 1/25/17.

Introduced when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement began in December 2011, the Competitive Balance Lottery gives teams that have either one of the 10 smallest markets or 10 smallest revenue pools one of six additional choices after each of the first and second rounds. Additionally, any other clubs that receive revenue-sharing funds are eligible for the supplemental second-round selections.

Best case scenario under the current CBA rules would be for us to creep into the top 20 of the 1st rd and to win a comp pick A, and pick directly after the first rd.  So something like picks #18 and #25.

Worst case scenario is that we sign a QO offer player and miss out in the comp pick lottery altogether.  Then we'd have 0 first rd picks.

Don't forget Trumbo got tagged with a QO.

Let's say that all 8 guys with QOs go to a different team.  Does that mean that the Mets (Cespedes) pick after the Cubs and the Orioles (Trumbo) pick after the Mets?

Yes, the QO picks would be in reverse order of standings, so the Mets' pick for Cespedes would be the only one slotted ahead of the Orioles' pick.

From the new CBA regarding the 2017 Competitive Balance Pick

  • Competitive Balance Selections will be continue to be awarded to Clubs in bottom-10 markets or bottom-10 in local revenue based on a combination of winning percentage and local revenue.  The lottery format was eliminated in favor of a system in which the eligible Clubs will receive selections after the first round or after the second round in alternating years.

Are we in the bottom 10 markets still?  If so we could pick

1st rd pick18-21

Potential comp pick for Trumbo 26-29

Competitive Balance PIck: 30-35

I still cannot find when they are awarding the picks. But the most important thing is if we're still in the bottom 10 market size and eligible for the comp pick?

Also, under the terms of the new CBA, those groups simply switch every year over the course of the 5-year CBA. So next year there will be 8 Round A picks and 6 Round B picks. The bottom line for the Orioles, they will have 3 additional 2nd round picks and 2 additional first round picks while this current CBA is in place.
