You suggested signing Tillman to a 4 year deal. A pitcher is always one pitch away from maybe their last. It's always a risk. And the Dr's said the found and fixed the issue. 2 straight healthy years later. Every contract is a risk. It just doesn't make sense to talk about tying all of your money into one player, a year after they chose to make Davis the highest paid Oriole ever. Which no one was happy with, especially if it meant saying bye to Manny.

OPS+ is never meaningless. Batting average usually is, especially in Revere's case. he doesn't get on base enough to mask his total lack of pop because he doesn't take walks. He has a career wRC+ of 83. That makes him 17 percent below league average offensively. He's a poor hitter.

Yeah.  Kind of like, oh... Michael Bourn.

Let's try the optimistic approach of throwing away last season as an aberration.  From 2012 to 2015, Revere was worth 9.8 oWAR... almost 2.5 a season.  His slash line incidentally was .300/.334/.360.  The OBP there is respectable, though largely driven by his average.  Notably, per 162 he only walked 29 times, but only struck out 64 times.  This is a respectable leadoff hitter.

Of course, reality includes last season, where he fell off a cliff offensively.  The other thing is, he's just an ok defensive OF, nothing superlative, as he is not a very good CF.  You could say, if the Orioles sign Revere with the intent to play him, he should go to CF with Jones moving to RF.  The Orioles could get away with signing him for LF, on the cheap, and moving Kim to DH.  In such a case he should still be the second, and lower priority signing.

Hadn't read this thread yet.  Read the last page to try and catch up.  The closest thing to on topic discussion is about Ben Revere.

Whatever happened to trying to trade for Preston Tucker?

Sign Pagan and trade for Preston and an outfield is born.

I used to like Tucker a bit.  Then I realized he's terrible on defense, strikes out a ton, and has bloated PCL aided AAA numbers.  He's basically a slightly better OF version of Christian Walker.

From MLBTR

  • Ben Revere could sign as soon as tomorrow, MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko reports (Twitter links).  The mystery team isn’t the Orioles, Kubatko notes, though the O’s like the outfielder and checked in on him more than once this offseason.  Revere is hoping to bounce back after an injury-marred and mediocre 2016 season that saw him get non-tendered by the Nationals earlier this month.

Glad we dodged that one.  Seems like an OAK move to me.

1/4 with plate-appearance-based incentives for up to 6.25 mil.

Looks like we have something close to our floor for a veteran FA OF.

Bourn probably would cost 1/4.5 straight up; R. Davis probably at least 1/5.

Pagan maybe 1/7 or 2/11.

Pagan gives you the most diverse set of skills out of anyone IMO.  Since Buck likes flexibility, I would still be targeting Pagan hard.
