Ok. My reseach is done.

I guess I'd forgotten Tillman used to be a good pitcher.

Since 2014, Tillman has 2 2games where he's had 4 hits or less, including  12 of 3 or less.

As for Gausman, there have only been 8 games where he's gone 6.2 innings and given up 4 hits or less, including 4 of 3 or less. That's what scares me about Gausman. Even though he throws 97+, he's almost never dominant.

And the post I quote above doesn't have all of the good games for Jimenez, just his best ones.

Since 2014, Ubaldo has 15 games where he's gone at least 6.2 innings and give up 4 hits or less including 9 of 3 or less.

Tillman's totals

2017: 0 games of 6.2 innings with 4 hits or less.

2016:
July 16 - 7 innings, 4 hits
july 21 - 7 innings, 4 hits.
July 10 - 7 inning 3 hits
May 24 - 7 innings 3 hits
April 27- 6.2 innings 2 hits.

2015 - June 28 - 7 inning, 4 hits
July 29 - 8.2 innings, 4 hits.
April 6 - 6.2 innings, 4 hits
Aug 22 - 6.2 innings 4 hits
Aug 17 - 7 innings 3 hits
May 1 - 7 innings 3 hits
May 1 - 7 innings 3 hits
July 24 - 7 inning 2 hits
July 18 - 8 innings 1 hit

2014- May 31 - 6.2 innings 4 hits
June 22 - 7 innings 4 hits
Aug 3 - 7 innings 4 hits
Aug 8 - 6.2 innings 4 hits.
July 18 - 6.2 innings 3 hits.
Aug 25 - 7 innings 3 hits
Apri 11 - 8 innings 3 hits
Aug 19 - 8 innings 3 hits.

Gausman's totals.

2017 - 0 games where he's gone 6.2 innings and given up 4 hits or less.

2016 - Sep 14- 8 innings , 4 hits
July 23 - 7 innings, 4 hits
June 25 - 7.2 innings 3 hits.
May 5 - 8 innings 3 hits

2015 - Aug 1- 7 innings 4 hits
Aug 23- 7 innings 3 hits.

2014 - June 7 - 7 innings 4 hits
July 30 - 7 innings 3 hits.

Maybe we're investing in the wrong pitcher.

Over the last 1 and-a-half seasons with the Orioles, Jimenez has been pitched considerably better when he has had 5 or more days' rest, as opposed to the customary 4.

And in his last 2 really good starts (against the Blue Jays and against the Cardinals), he has had 5 days' rest. In the clunker in between, he had 4 days' rest. And today, he was on 4 days' rest.

On regular rest, again.

Like Dylan Bundy on Thursday, Jimenez had one bad inning.

Unlike Dylan Bundy on Thursday, Jimenez was able to complete 5 innings, and left the game with his team leading.

Other than the 2nd inning, Ubaldo did just fine.

There was an article in the Sunday Sun sports section,on page 2. I don't immediately have the URL. It was about a list put out by the online Sporting News: The Least Valuable Players by position. This designation was done by comparing WAR with the player's current salary. Two Orioles made this list. The Least Valuable Shortstop was JJ Hardy. The Least Valuable Starting Pitcher was Ubaldo Jimenez.

But Ubaldo was valuable today for me, along with our offense.

The Grand Poo bah of the Ubaldo Jimenez Fan Club

I just watched the second inning...he had 2 outs with one HBP..he had 2 strikes and a very close swing that would've ended the inning...he then fell apart...one pitch could've made the difference and yet he couldn't get it...still, he settled down for 2 more innings after that...what a weird pitcher this guy is...its Mr. Ubaldo's Wild Ride.

The home plate umpire refused to call low strikes for Ubaldo. I remember when he had those two strikes. He had another strike which should have ended the inning. But the umpire called it a ball. As I remember,  Ubaldo threw another low strike that was called a ball. Then he threw it higher and it was hit for a double and later a single. Roger McDowell came out. Bleirer started to warm up. Ubaldo was clearly upset; he took his hat off, which he rarely does. But McDowell got him settled down and Ubaldo promptly got the 3rd out (believe that it was a fly or ground ball to Manny). After that, Ubaldo was just fine. Buck took him out after the 5th inning because of number of pitches.

Oh well, remember that he is MLB 's Least Valuable Starting Pitcher.  ?

According to pitch f/x, the ump completely missed one pitch, and had two others that were borderline strikes but called balls.http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/pfx.php?s_type=3&sp_type=1&year=2017&month=7&day=9&batterX=&pitchSel=434622&game=gid_2017_07_09_balmlb_minmlb_1/&pnf=&prevGame=gid_2017_07_09_balmlb_minmlb_1/&prevDate=79&inning2=y

Ubaldo got hosed.  I think he actually looked pretty good.  If Ubaldo can avoid FB counts he's actually ok.  That just rarely happens.
