Prior to the 2-out, 2-run home run in the 9th inning, Crichton did a reasonably good job of saving the rest of the bullpen in a lost-cause game.

And he was rewarded with a trip to Norfolk.

Good thing we sent him down, after Ubaldo and Wilson's performances last night.

Do you really think Dan and Buck are done by just sending Crichton down?

o

Correct.

Getting sent down is not a punishment for a pitcher (especially when he has just pitched well.) It's the reality of the 25-man roster, the context and considerations of players who do and don't have options, and the subsequent shuttle between Baltimore and Norfolk.

Wilson himself pitched a very solid 6-inning game earlier this season, and was immediately sent down to AAA-Norfolk the next day. Getting sent down doesn't necessarily represent Duquette's evaluation of a player, it represents what the Orioles' immediate needs are in relation to the number of fresh arms that they have available for the next 4 or 5 days.

Aquino has also been recalled.  I'm not sure why ... but he has.

o

Although he has not pitched well at the AAA-level, Aquino hasn't pitched since May 18th ...... so he may be used to take one for the team if the Orioles are down by a lot early over the next couple of games, or if they are up by a lot late in the game and Showalter wants to save Brach, O'Day, and Givens for higher leverage situations.

It may be a temporary move (like when Mike Wright was called up one day several weeks ago, and sent back down the very next day without having thrown a pitch), or it may be for having a fresh arm available in the situations that I previously cited.

There is a method to Duquette's proverbial madness in regard to the Baltimore-Norfolk shuttle. Sometimes the reasons are immediately obvious, and sometimes they are not.
