“There’s a hard cap on the international scouting market, so there are a number of teams that spent beyond their cap and went into the penalty,” Duquette said. “With the hard cap coming up next year, teams saw that there was some liquidity in the market for the calendar year that ends July 1. So, the hard cap worked to enhance the value of these picks, and we’ve been able to use them to acquire some pitchers to help our organization.”

Gotta give Dan a little credit for this off season.   Gallardo for Smith.   No multi year contract for Wieters and he gets the cheaper Castillo.   Then he stockpiles a bunch of AAAA arms in Ynoa, Verrett, Bleier, Castro, Asher, and lately Kipper.     He also acquired Nuno who has stunk.

Almost every acquistion, with the exclusion of Nuno, has made a contribution.    Smith and Castillo have been key cogs in the lineup and solid enough on defense.   The AAA brigade has contributed, to say the least.

Sure.  The only misstep of consequence is the Trumbo overpay.

And not trading Britton if you are into that.

Yeah, if we had believed Trey's bat is as ready as it appears to be and that he could be at least serviceable in the OF, the Trumbo money could have been out to better use. If we're still in the hunt by August, I suspect we'll be glad that we kept all our relief guys.

Better than just having it go to waste but when 29 teams zig and your team zags you have to figure they are not making the best possible move.

"An organization that we can be proud of."

Buck on Trum:

On Trumbo: “Mark, he’s a professional. He grinds every at-bat. I’ve seen him have three hits and a couple home runs, and not have a good at-bat and it’s like he hasn’t gotten a hit in his whole life. He takes a lot of pride in delivering what people expect of him, and that’s why he’s so easy to trust with the type of commitment we made to him.”

Trumbo is overpaid?

Looking at what comparable players got this offseason, yes. It's not egregious, but he probably could've been had cheaper.

That said, he's got us in prime position again, despite the early bullpen struggles

I like Trumbo. But consider that his at-bats could be pretty effectively replaced by a combination of Kim, Mancini, and Pedro Alvarez. Trumbo got a three year deal and is currently earning more than those three guys combined.

Edwin Encarnación got 3yr/ $60 million at 34 yrs old. He's batting .199.

Trumbo got 3 yr/ $37.5 million at 31 yrs old. He's leading the team in hits.

Sure, look at what guys like Carter and Bautista ended up getting.  Encarnacion was snatched up early, before folks saw how weak the market was.  Encarnacion also has a much better track record than Trumbo.

What team, other than the O's, do you think would have given Trumbo more than say 2/22?

Bunch of teams will probably wish they gave Trumbo that contract before its done.
