The worst part is that is that his K/BB is even worse than last year's. For all his "extreme selectiveness" he is not even walking as much. Overall, he's nearing replacement level.

Because no pitcher is even thinking about pitching around him anymore. Basically throw it down the middle, he won't hit it or won't swing anyhow.

Actually, since returning from the DL, Davis has struck out looking far less frequently than before his injury.

Pre-DL: 95 strikeouts in 61 games, 54 swinging (.89/game), 41 looking (.67/game).

Post-DL: 33 strikeouts in 23 games, 25 swinging (1.09/game), 8 looking (.35/game).

So, the truth is, he has adjusted his game and gotten more aggressive.   But it hasn't helped his overall results.    He's ice cold right now and we'll just have to hope he heats up.

Not when he's looking off-speed.  Complete guess hitter due to his screwed up mechanics which cause his bat to take forever to get through the zone.

And just five years at $23 million a season to go. When Manny is playing for someone else in two years, i hope everyone enjoys Davis a lot more.

That's really going to frustrate me. Talk about a misallocation of resources!

Maybe that's something. It's possible he is not seeing the ball.

Chris Davis has a lifetime Z Swing % (Swinging percentage of balls inside the strike zone) of 70.9%.  In the last three years he was at:

2014: 70.4%

2015: 72.2%

2016: 64.1%

This year: 56.8%

What is clear is Chris is not swinging at balls inside the strike zone, whether that is because he can't see them, or he can't recognize the pitches, I don't know.  Maybe he thinks it's working because his Z contact rate has jumped from around 76% to 80%.  But it is not, because he striking out 37% of the time, higher than any other time in his career.

Chris is a huge guy, he needs to swing the bat, even if he is not seeing the ball clearly he doesn't need to get much of the ball to hit it hard, or a long way.

No doubt, along with the O'day and Trumbo contracts and well as the QO to Wieters, the same person is behind this "veteran" team full of non productive expensive players that are going to cost this team Machado, Britton and possibly Schoop. In other words, the guys you should be building your roster around along with Gausman and Bundy.

1st base power is normally readily available to teams, so signing a guy with giant red flags to a ridiculous 7-year contract goes beyond any sane assessment. This team should be built around Machado, Schoop, Bundy, and possibly Mancini at this point. Allocations of $10 million+ contracts outside of them should be kept at a minimum. Right now this team is paying ridiculous amounts to unproductive players:

Davis - $21,118,782
Jimenez - 13,500,000
Tillman - $10,050,000
Hardy - $14,000,000
Trumbo - $11,000,000

Only Machado, ($11,500,000) Britton ($11,400,000) and Jones ($16,000,000) have produced and Machado is having one of his worse seasons (although better of late) and Britton was hurt for most of the year.

The good news is that Hardy, Jimenez and Miley ($8,750,000) come off the books next year but this team is going to have to give arbitration raises to Manny, Britton, Gausman, Schoop, Brach and Joseph. Where is the starting pitching going to come from?

If they convert Castro to a starter and he has success (far from a certainty) that's one, but they still need one more. Maybe you can get Hellickson on the decently cheap he could be another, but that's probably $12 million a season at best. I'd bring Tillman back on a minor league deal if he would accept and see ho he looks next spring, but honestly, there's not a lot of options without spending a ton on FA pitching and then you can kiss Machado, Britton, and possibly Schoop good bye.

Some of his guesses are mystifying then. Last night, after Schoop singled, Davis was up 3-1 in the count and took a fastball down the middle for strike two. Who is guessing off-speed in that situation?

Is this any different than the Davis we've known - except that his weaknesses have gotten... weaker.

The contract the O's gave him never made any sense - one of the single stupidest moves in the history of the O's organization.

In a 3-1 or 3-2 count he may be looking for a walk.

That's another type of guessing - that the next pitch will be a ball.
