Caleb Joseph, former catcher for the Lipscomb Bisons, signed a contract Friday afternoon with the Baltimore Orioles. He has been assigned to the Aberdeen Ironbirds, A Class A minor league affiliate for the Orioles located in Aberdeen, Md.

Joseph, who had planned to spend at least part of the summer as a bullpen catcher for the Nashville Sounds, picked up his equipment at Greer Stadium. He is expected to join Aberdeen Saturday for workouts.

“The biggest thing was that they had been on me pretty hard since for the last five months,’’ Joseph said. “We’ve been in contact forever and we have a pretty good relationship. They said they were going to pick me from March on. I believed them, and they came through and did what they said.”

Plus some rumors:

Barajas will also sign with the Baltimore Orioles in the next couple of weeks and is also expected to report to the Orioles Gulf Coast League Rookie League team. Barajas would likely command a signing bonus around $20,000.

The Orioles will go by “last year’s numbers and then go from there,” said Barajas on how his signing bonus will be negotiated. “I want to get started with my pro career and start working.”

It's also the reason Martin could still end up at Fullerton. His "number," or the dollar amount at which he's told the Orioles he would sign, is significantly higher than what 19th-round picks would normally receive (around $25,000).

Stevens said he is 99 percent sure he will forgo his senior year and turn professional. He wants to improve his consistency and hopes the success he encountered on the field for the Huskies in 2008 will translate into a good start to his professional career.

Landers has accepted a scholarship to the University of Louisville. He said he was thrilled to be picked by the Orioles, but hasn’t decided whether to go to school or sign with Baltimore. He plans to leave that decision in the hands of his father and his adviser so he can concentrate on baseball, including SPM’s game tomorrow against Leominster High for the CMass title.

Hoping Landers' dad needs some $ :)

Same with the fathers of Corey Thomas, Kevin Brady, Jarrett Martin, Jesse Beal, and Bobby Bundy. ;)

Also, I'd assume that the scouting department had an idea as to what it would take to sign these high school talents, right? I hope last year set a good precedent as far as over-slotting and getting top talent that falls.
