This list is kind of nuts.  Chances of trading him to Red Sox, Yankees, and Nationals are extraordinarily low.

Angels farm system is not very good nor is the Mets.  Brewers are interesting and maybe Cleveland but only if they gave up a ton I think.

If you are going to lose him at the end of 2018 it's time to face the music.

If you can't get Bostons to cough up Devers,  Groome, Johnson, and Mata you do the deal. The article specifically mentions Devers I've added the rest.

If Boston gives up all that I'll personally drive Manny to the airport.

If they give up Devers, I imagine thats all we get.  Groome would come with a guy closer to the MLB maybe like Johnson.

The Orioles will never do one for be on Machado. Even the article said Devers is a nice prospect but Manny is an elite player. Your getting 3-5 top end players for Manny if dealt. That's why the article suggest a contender whom is serious about a run at the World Series, willing to pay the price.

If you think the Orioles are accepting a player or two your kidding yourself.

I think you are exactly right. And I think that is exactly why you have to trade Manny this off season. Now I don't think they will, I have never seen this FO do the right thing and I don't expect them to start now.

There are no known offers, and it would obviously take a ton for the Orioles to even consider moving such a superstar. The Yankees and Phillies are among many teams expected to have interest in Machado, who is eligible for free agency after the 2018 season – though the call list isn’t known.

About the Red Sox

Quote

Red SoxRafael Devers is a nice-looking young player and a highly ranked prospect. Machado is a legitimate MVP player, and if you're trying to win next season, which the Red Sox are trying to do, Machado would be the way to go at third.

How much is Manny worth for one year to a team who is not desperate realistically?

How much is Manny worth for two months to a team who is desperate realistically?

For these reasons, I do not see Manny being traded.  The time to get the kind of value they are probably looking for has passed.  They will take the 6 WAR season and the 20 percent shot of a playoff birth with him on a roster over the possible trade return.

Honestly not surprised this is emerging now. With the Orioles not scoring any of the 3 budget conscious starters which all made sense for them (Chatwood,Fiers,Mikolas), there's not a whole lot of targets out there that make sense unless the Orioles are ready to venture into the Lynn,Cobb market which would surprise pretty much everyone.

I think that Manny would have drawn that at the past deadline and even more last offseason.  He will not return that for a one year rental when teams know we are getting more and more desperate, imho.  They might as well keep him now because I think the return will be much less than what it could have been.

Yeah, all the other options are either too pricey to add more than one or not very good.  Perhaps they get creative with trades, I don't know, I hope they'll come to their senses and sell short term assets but I'm not holding my breath.

The return @Roll Tide is suggesting is at least equal to the Bedard return if not more.  Jones was a top 30ish prospect who had already debuted, Devers is a top 20 prospect who has debuted.  Devers had a strong debut.  Groome and Tillman are comparable as 19yo top 100 pitching prospects.  The big difference is Bedard had 3 years of control, Manny has one.  That's why I don't think the Red Sox would even consider that, but what do I know.  The only thing I know for sure is if someone (no matter if it's the Yankees or the Red Sox) makes an offer like that, you'd be an absolute fool not to take it.

    • Elias spending the $25M early, Roster Resource has us at $122M tonight, 19th in MLB. If we close Burnes, we hit 13th for a minute.    Any AAV between 29 and 44 lands us between SFG at $167M and BOS at $150M. That'd just be a momentary crest - we land Burnes to make $65M in new 2025 salary and we're near done while most of the Top 50 free agents still have jobs to get. But to the OP point, that'd set us at ~$160 with all the studs the cheapest they'll ever be again in 2025.    We will get to reconfigure about $35M next winter when Eflin, Mullins and Sanchez walk, and of course there's the calculation/hope O'Neill plays well enough to opt out. I do think the O's financial analysts deserve a little credit for finding a contract balance where the CLUB is hoping the player opts out too.
    • It's not SA vs TO or the platoon, it's 2024 ( Hayes, Cowser, Ced, and Tony vs Cowser, Ced Heston and TO and Maybe Mateo. All things being equal (injuries), I bet the 2025 outfield.
    • Adley needs to turn his trend line around to justify roughly 20% of core payroll.  2025 will be an important season for him IMO.
    • Thx for laying this out. I would also add that if think about budget in terms over multiple years (any +/- carried over), there definitely is ample room or excess in 2026 as it currently stands with nearly $70M likely dropping off (estimates per roster resource) $18M Eflin $8.5M Sanchez $8M Seranthony $8M OHearn $5.6M Soto $8.7M Mullins $3.2M Mateo $2.5M no buyouts of Kimbrel + Jimenez  $5.7M Mounty (likely to be moved by 2026) $3.2M Urias (likely to be moved by 2026) A lot of those $$$ could be backfilled with pre-arb internal guys, leaving ample room to supplement and/or carry over to more than offset future years climbing arb increases.
    • last i checked, it was one plus a throw in. When they become throw ins, because the GM owes the former prospect playing time, they are no longer solid.
    • Now if someone could find a list of Boras clients with respect to their WAR, that would be interesting. Pre FA and after.

Do you consider Ethan Holliday’s swing flaw being identified this early something that works for (he’s not even 18 yet) or against him? 12:45 Eric A Longenhagen: Fugee is talking about this podcast appearance: Ep. 125: Jim Callis and Eric Longenhagen join the show. A Draft Lottery Preview. | Patreon 12:47 Eric A Longenhagen: I’m not sure it’s correctable, I think his hands just work in a way that leaves him very vulnerable to many fastballs up/away. I have him more middle of the first round. 72% contact guy on the showcase circuit, hit .240 and slugged .380 when you add up his entire multi-year showcase sample. Love the raw power potential, don’t think the performance merits a top 5 pick. But the Colorado/Holliday connection and Washington’s willingness to take guys like Elijah Green looms.
