Well, I'd refer people to the thread where they espoused it OR cite the moderators, but that is just me.

Seriously? I haven't read any of that stuff in who knows how long. I was just giving my impression of how I believe the system is supposed to be used. You and everyone else are free to agree or disagree, but this is a game thread, not the Hangout feedback section. I responded to a post trying to provide help to the two posters who were upset. I had no intention of starting a big debate over the rep system. That's all I have to say about that.

Well, I normally wouldn't post this type of thing here, but since she posted about it and several people responded, I'll just give my side. She sent me a PM about the rep and this was my response:

Hi Cindy,

Since you messaged me and posted in the thread about the reputation I left, I'm guessing you want an honest response, which I will give.

It was sort of shocked that someone with over 13,000 posts would not know what PR meant in the context of a sentence involving an injured runner on base in a close game, that sentence being in a post in a game thread. 'PR' is not just messageboard shorthand, it is the acronym used when keeping score, appearing in box scores in newspapers and on websites. So, my honest reaction, was shock.

Relatedly, I think that the game threads can get cluttered. Everyone should be allowed to post whatever they like, but I find it somewhat annoying when people, and not just you others also, ask questions that they could easily answer themselves with one or two clicks to MLB.com or ESPN.com.

Finally, one might say, "Well if you haven't anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all." While a fair enough sentiment in some circumstances, the negative reputation option exists for a reason. It makes no sense to have any sort of reputation or credit system if people are expected to censor themselves on the basis of supposed propriety or avoidance of appearing cruel.

Thus, I was not trying to be cruel nor doling out negative reputation for sport. No hard feelings.

I respect your honesty and reasoning behind your decision. What I hate is when someone negative rep for an ass reason and offers no remorse or explanation. Don't sweat it, bottom line is there's two options-positive rep and negative rep. People get all worked about negative rep (and I have before too), but i've given it a couple times myself and the mods gave us the option of giving negative rep, so it is what it is.
