Wade Boggs once drank 64 beers on a cross country flight.

I had a friend who used to celebrate his birthday by drinking the number of cans of beer that matched his age.   Starting early in the day, he was able to do it at 24, but on his 25th birthday he passed out after 23.

That's Chris Davis type of regression.

83% of the outs that Cobb recorded (15 out of 18) came via the Groundout and the Strikeout.

He reminded me just a bit of Tommy John when he pitched for the Yankees in the late 70's and early 80's.

In one game against the Orioles in April of 1979, 18 out of the 27 outs that he recorded in came via the Groundout.

After this game, the Orioles will (likely) be 5-10 overall.

They need to avoid the fate of what happened to the Blue Jays last season, when they started out with a 10-20 record in the first 30 games of the season, and were never able to dig themselves out of the hole that they had made for themselves.

Cashner appears to have come around fairly quickly after one clunker.

With Cobb, it remains to be seen when exactly he'll come around (probably anywhere between his 2nd and 5th start of the season.)

I'm more concerned about whether or not the Orioles can manage to tread water in the team's W-L department for the first 5 or 6 weeks of the season than I am about whether or not Cobb will return to his (usually solid) form.

I believe that Cobb was awful in his first game.

In his 2nd start, I think that he was a little better than his final line showed, although that isn't saying much.

In his 3rd start, he looked good for 4 innings before getting rocked in the 5th.

In his 4th start, he looked solid overall.

Unfortunately, Cobb was signed at the last minute (and subsequently had no Spring Training.) As SteveA pointed out prior to Cobb's first start of the season 3 weeks ago, there is a reason why Spring Training is 6 weeks long.

The Marlins got 3 runs in the top of the first inning vs Arrieta.

So guys who signed after Spring Training had started, in their debut games so far:

1) ) Andrew Cashner gave up 3 HRs in his first outing.

2) ) Lance Lynn gave up 5 runs in the first inning.

3) ) Jake Arrieta gave up 3 runs in the top of the first inning.

So don't necessarily expect much from Cobb in his initial start of the season, folks. There's a reason why Spring Training is 6+ weeks long ........ and It isn't the hitters, who could probably be game-ready in 2-3 weeks ........ and it isn't the short relievers, who probably could be ready in 4 weeks ........ it's the starting pitchers.

Not including the 2 base-runners who were caught stealing, 80% of the outs that Cobb recorded (12 out of 16) came via the Groundout and the Strikeout.

Cobb continues his (somewhat) impersonation of Tommy John when he pitched for the Yankees in the late 70's and early 80's.

The good news is that Cobb has gradually evolved into the pitcher that many of us were expecting him to be after not having had any Spring Training to work with.

The bad news is that the team's W-L record is 8-26, and they are in an even deeper hole than were the Blue Jays last season when they went 10-20 in their first 30 games.

71% of the outs that Cobb recorded (12 out of 17) came via the Groundout and the Strikeout.

He gave up 2 booming home runs in the 1st and 4th innings, but his defense also let him down with 2 misplays (one officially an error that lead to an unearned run, the other a very catchable ball that led to a triple and another run.)

This is one to build off of. I'd love to see him win four in a row !!!

I'll be happy if he pitches like he has in any of his last 4 outings, 3 of which were better than tonight's.

http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/31086/alex-cobb

He can't control the offense and/or the defense playing behind him.

12 beers an hour over five hours?  I have my suspicions about the validity of this.

Alcohol content aside, I don't believe a 190 pound man would be able to ingest nearly that much fluid over such a short period of time.
