Alex Cobb Once Saved a Stray Dog that was Running in Traffic

In the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th innings combined, Cobb threw a total of 35 pitches ........ facing 13 batters and recording 12 outs in the process.

Unfortunately he threw 42 pitches in the previous inning (the 3rd), and allowed 3 runs in the process.

For 6 outs of the 7 innings that he pitched, Cobb did a 1979 Tommy John imitation ........ again, with that very bad 3rd inning mixed in with it.

Perhaps just a little organizational common sense for the O's

When a pitcher is still unsigned on March 21st, that means a lot of teams with scouting departments far superior to your own have passed.

Perhaps you should pass also.

Very few pitchers will sign here if they have any sort of competing offer.

What's worse?

That the Orioles signed Chris Tillman this year?

Or that the Orioles signed Chris Tillman part two to the highest contract ever given to a pitcher by them?

There are no excuses left. Alex Cobb has just sucked this year. He's been worse than Ubaldo Jimenez.

At least Tillman is on a one year deal and didn't cost a draft pick.

I'm trying to think. Have the Orioles ever signed a MLB starting pitcher as a free agent to a significant contract and he ended up performing well for them?

Chen may be the best free agent starter they ever signed.

Kevin Brown and Jimmy Key over 20 years ago?

Yeah...

Kevin Brown was only a one year contract and did decent but not amazing. Jimmy Key gave us one great season, got married in the offseason, and was never the same again.

We historically have had bad luck with free agent starters. Maybe that's why we are drafting pitchers like they are going out of style in the drafts the last few years.
