That’s pretty succinct, but I’ll say the ‘79 team was probably equally good because all the other key players were 4 years younger.   Look how quickly the team deteriorated after ‘83.

That '83 squad, as I remember, had to rely on a mid-August surge to take the pennant that year. And it was a last gasp of a long dynasty. The '79 team was more prime, as Frobby points out, closer to the peak of that last era of excellence, 77-78-79-80-81-82-83. You could argue the 100-win second-place 1980 O's were the best of the bunch.

In my rat's ass of an opinion, the 1977 and the 1980 teams were as good as either one of them.

Doug Decines was better than whomever played third on 83 team.  I think Glenn Gulliver was third baseman second half of 82.

With that being said. The 83 team finished the deal. That shouldn’t be overlooked.

Part of the motivation of the 83 team was to show they could win it without Earl in charge.

‘79 was more balanced offensively but ‘83 had peak Ripken and Murray, as well as arguably just as good pitching.  And jimmy Dwyer.
