Well, I went with Reyes, but Mountcastle would have been my second choice.   One point in Mounty’s favor is that he’s exactly the same age as Reyes (2 days apart) but putting up his numbers two levels higher in the minors.

I hope to see both players finish strong.

Oh, and Mountcastle did it before he won this award and is highly likely to do it after. Reyes maintaining a hot streak would be newsworthy.

Mountcastle has had an extremely consistent season to date - and a pretty consistent career, for that matter.    The same cannot be said for Reyes, unfortunately.   Or, maybe you could say he’s been consistent the last 3 years, but not in a good way.    In any event, hope springs eternal.   He’s continued to hit well so far in August (.944 OPS).  Maybe he’ll win the award this month!

August 2019

I couldn’t decide whether to do August by itself, or throw the two September days in.    But August is August, and I have the time to spend looking at this today.

Players:

Ryan Mountcastle, .283/.363/.556, 6 HR 16 RBI

Mason Williams, .356/.437/.556, 4 HR, 13 RBI

Toby Welk, .315/.337/.494, 3 HR, 12 RBI

Pitchers:

Chandler Shepherd 37.1 IP, 1.69 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 7.7 K/9, 2.7 K/BB

Zach Lowther, 32.0 IP, 2.81 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 11.0 K/9, 3.9 K/BB

Gray Fenter, 19.0 IP, 0.95 ERA, 0.63 WHIP, 11.4 K/9, 4.8 K/BB

Grayson Rodriguez, 21.2 IP, 2.49 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 13.3 K/9, 3.7 K/BB

Ryan Wilson, 28.2 IP, 1.88 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 10.4 K/9, 3.3 K/BB

Kevin Magee, 33.0 IP, 0.55 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, 11.5 K/9, 21.0 K/BB

Tough calls, but I’m going with Mason Williams and Kevin Magee. Neither is really a prospect, but they gave the best performances in August IMO.

Brett Cumberland probably didn't play enough, but

.256./473./462 with more walks than Ks is pretty strong, especially with most of it in the pitcher friendly Eastern League environment.

Jake Prizina, 20 IP, 1.80 ERA, .60 WHIP, 11.7 K/9, 6.5 K/BB

Relievers worth highlighting,

Steven Klimek  16 IP, .56 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 10.7 K/9, 2.1 K/BB

Zach Muckenhirn 11.2 IP, .77 ERA, .86 WHIP, 13.9 K/9, 3.6 K/BB

Christian Alvarado 13.1 IP, 2.70 ERA, .68 WHIP, 13.5 K/9, 10 K/BB

Griffin McLarty 9 IP, 0 ERA, .56 WHIP, 18.0 K/9, (18Ks/0 BBs)

Garrett Farmer 11 IP, 0 ERA, .45 WHIP, 13.9 K/9, (17Ks/0 BBs)

Andry Mercedes 10 IP, .90 ERA, .60 WHIP, 15.3 K/9, 8.5 K/BB

Tanner Scott 12.2 IP, 2.13 ERA, .79 WHIP, 10.0 K/9, 7 K/BB

Ahhh, nice to revive this after a year’s hiatus. And SO many great candidates!

May 2021 player of the month

Adley Rutschman, .293/.465/.573, 6 HR 20 RBI

Patrick Dorian, .246/.416/.609, 7 HR 19 RBI

Jordan Westburg, .366/.484/.592, 3 HR 24 RBI

Gunnar Henderson, .313/.391/.613, 6 HR, 30 RBI

J.D. Mundy, .324/.461/.577, 4 HR, 20 RBI

In a normal month, any of those five would be a very deserving winner.  To me, the most impressive performance was Henderson’s, considering his age compared to the league.   And 30 RBI in 23 games is incredibly impressive.   So, I’m giving him the award even though he had the lowest OPS of the five.

May 2021 Pitcher of the Month

Great choices here too.

Kyle Bradish, 22.0 IP, 16 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 BB, 35 K’s, 1.23 ERA,  1.14 WHIP, 14.3 K/9, 3,9 K/BB

D.L. Hall, 21.0 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 11 BB, 39 K’s, 2.14 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 16.7 K/9, 3.6 K/BB

Kevin Smith, 17.0 IP, 12 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 9 BB, 22 K’s, 1.06 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 11.6 K/9, 2.4 K/BB

Grayson Rodriguez, 23.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 40 K’s, 1.54 ERA, 0.69 WHIP,  15.4 K/9, 8.0 K/BB

Kyle Brnovich, 16.1 IP, 8 H, 10 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 19 K’s, 1.65 ERA, 0.61 WHIP, 10.5 K/9, 9.5 K/BB

They’ve all been terrific, but I’ve got to go with Rodriguez here.   Bradish, Hall and Brnovich each had one bad outing, while Rodriguez hasn’t had one.   Neither has Smith, but he’s been less dominant with the K’s snd has the worst K/BB of the five.

Without doing any research, I’d probably go with J.D. Mundy and Grayson Rodriguez as player/pitcher of the month for June.   But let’s see who’s lurking around.

Norfolk

Zach Jarrett .286/.412/.543, 4 HR 12 RBI

Bowie

Grayson Rodriguez 24.2 IP, 13 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 7 BB, 36 K’s, 1.82 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 13.1 K/9.
Blaine Knight 25.2 IP, 17 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 7 BB, 25 K’s, 2.10 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 8.8 K/9

Cameron Bishop 22.0 IP, 10 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 7 BB, 32 K’s, 0.00 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 13.1 K/9

Aberdeen/Bowie

Kyle Brnovich 22.0 IP, 13 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 10 BB, 35 K’s, 2.86 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 14.3 K/9

Aberdeen

J.D. Mundy .284/.348/.667, 8 HR 20 RBI

Delmarva

Ignacio Feliz 18.1 IP  8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0.98 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, 9.8 K/9.

I’m sticking with Mundy over Jarrett, but Bishop’s 0.00 ERA gives him the edge over Grayson even though he threw fewer innings.

if I missed anyone, let me know.

I’m on fire!

Minor league honors: The Orioles announced that first baseman JD Mundy and lefty pitcher Cameron Bishop were the recipients of the O’s Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month Awards for June, respectively.

Mundy, who appeared in 21 games for high Single-A Aberdeen, slashed .284/.348/.667 with a 1.015 OPS, going 23-for-81 with seven doubles, eight home runs, 19 runs and 20 RBIs. Mundy started the season with low Single-A Delmarva, before being promoted to Aberdeen on June 1. Bishop pitched to a 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA (zero earned runs/22 innings pitched) and 32 strikeouts. He posted a 0.77 WHIP with a .139 opponent batting average in five games for Double-A Bowie in June.

July 2021

Player of the Month

As I foreshadowed yesterday in another thread, this race comes down to Robert Neustrom, Kyle Stowers and Jordan Westburg, all of whom had fantastic months.   In order of their current affiliate level:

Neustrom .297/.414/.615, 7 HR, 25 RBI

Stowers .340/.436/.640, 7 HR, 15 RBI

Westburg .333/.447/.576, 5 HR, 18 RBI

While you really couldn't go wrong picking any of the three, I'm giving it to Neustrom for two reasons.   First, I'm a sucker for RBI, and 25 is a lot.   Second, he got a mid-month promotion to AAA and didn't miss a beat, putting up a .297/.400/.622 line at the highest level of the minors.   So he's my choice, though Stowers posted the best BA, SLG and OPS of the three, and Westburg had the best OBP.   A terrific month for all three, and let's hope it continues.

Pitcher of the Month

There are several good candidates here, too, again in order of current affiliate:

Baumann 27.0 IP, 17 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 30 K's, 2.33 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, 10.0 K/9

Brnovich 22.0 IP, 15 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 24 K's, 2.86 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 9.8 K/9

Rom 30.0 IP, 23 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 10 BB, 32 K's, 1.50 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 9.6 K/9

Denoyer 24.1 IP, 19 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 27 K's, 1.85 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 10.0 K/9

H. Roth 23.0 IP, 14 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 6 BB, 10 K's 2.35 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 7.4 K/9

Again, an excellent month for all five.   I'm choosing Rom, for a few reasons.   First, he had the best ERA of the group.   Second, he was very consistent, allowing 1 run or less in 5 of his 6 outings.   He also picked up five wins (yes, I'm going there!).   He led all our pitchers in IP in July, having the advantage of making six starts.   And finally, he successfully navigated his first AA start last night, allowing only 1 run and 4 hits in 5 IP.   Rom is only 21, so to have made it to AA is an accomplishment.

Anyway, it's nice to have so many good performances to choose from, but Neustrom and Rom are my picks.   How about you?

First of all. I never saw an announcement by the Orioles of their July player/pitcher of the month.   And I looked hard!

August 2021

There are tons of choices on the offense side, not so many among the pitchers.

Player of the month candidates

Here’s a shout out to @RZNJ for his August Performers thread back on August 25 that gave me a head start on the position players.   Here’s my list for them, sorted according to the highest level they’ve played at.

Rylan Bannon, .240/.337/.653, 10 HR, 18 RBI

Adley Rutschman, .337/.408/.511, 3 HR, 11 RBI

Zach Watson, .298/.318/.595, 7 HR, 21 RBI

Johnny Rizer, .289/.333/.513, 4 HR, 15 RBI

Andrew Daschbach, .291/.411/.544, 5 HR,  17 RBI

Lamar Sparks, .310/.381/.506, 3 HR, 14 RBI

Colton Cowser, .403/.531/.548, 1 HR, 18 RBI

Coby Mayo, .271/.403/.525, 3 HR, 11 RBI

Mishael Deson, .431/.452/.672, 3 HR, 11 RBI

Pitcher of the month candidates

Michael Baumann, 22.0 IP, 1.64 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 9.0 K/9.

Grayson Rodriguez, 23.1 IP, 3.09 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 15.0 K/9

Brandon Young, 19.0 IP, 2.84 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 13.7 K/9

Jean Pinto, 30.2 IP, 2.05 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, 10.9 K/9

My picks

Really tough choice among the position players.  Deson has the best slash line, but at the lowest level and he only played 16 games in August.   Cowser has the second best, but half of it was earned in the FCL where he was very overqualified.  I think I’d go with Bannon, even though his BA was only .240 and most of the damage was done in about a week and a half.   Even so, ten homers in a month is a lot, at it’s at the highest level of the minors, so I’ll go with him.

For the pitchers, I’m going with Pinto, who already was named Low A East pitcher of the month for August.   He’d only made one Low A start prior to August, and yet he made 5 starts, went 6 innings twice, 5 innings twice and 4.2 the other time, pitching well in all 5 games.   He had the most innings by a lot and lowest WHIP of any of the candidates and second lowest ERA.    So he’s my choice.

Who do you like?

    • This might explain the Orioles clear change in approach.  If you see a pitch you like on the first pitch take a big fat rip at it.  League average SLG is .550 and the O's are at .700.  So there's some analytical wisdom behind going up and hacking.
    • I can't find the article right now, but I recall reading a while back that there was some evidence that hitting tons of home runs correlates with beating your pythagorean expectation.  That's one of the reasons why the early-mid 2010s Orioles teams with prime Chris Davis frequently beat our expected win totals.  Since we're at or close to the stabilization rate for a lot of HR/power numbers I don't think the conclusion here is that our style of play is unsustainable.   Also, offense around the league is in the absolute gutter, so the runs we're able to score are pretty meaningful.
    • Then again, a game with all three of them homering would be sweet! (Bonus question: which outcome is more likely?)
    • I appreciate that he’s not flipping coins, and I know he has a reason for what he does, but a lot of the time, his reasoning is objectively bad. And that’s not really a source of debate. Just like Buck had a reason for saving Britton…but it was a really bad reason. any opinion, by definition, is debatable. A individual decision can be objectively good or bad whether or not it actually succeeds. Overall, most of the time we can give him the benefit of the doubt, but there have been lots of glaring bad decisions. I’ve mentioned Ned Yost. Even the folks at Royals review thought he was an idiot, but he had a splendid team that worked really well for a couple seasons.
    • He's young and has a very boisterous personality. This funk literally started the day he was crowned player of the week. He's trying too hard and pressing to get back to / repeat that performance.  Another learning experience. Hopefully he locks in soon and levels that mentality out. I also think Jackson being sent down has probably made him feel pressured as well. They seemed to be pretty close. The culmination of those things just screams trying too hard to me
    • Okay, I am going to lay into Cowser a bit here.  In the majors, a runner on 3B with less than two outs is advanced slightly more than half the time.  A runner on 2B with nobody out also is advanced a little more than half the time.   Cowser has had the most opportunities with a runner on 3B and less than two out of anyone on the team, and he’s 4 for 14 (28.6%) in those situations.  He’s also had the most opportunities with a runner on second and nobody out, and has advanced the runner only 3 times in 9 opportunities.   In RISP situations, he’s hitting .222/.250/.417.   In Late & Close situations, he’s hitting .095/.130/.238.  In high leverage situations, he’s hitting .048/.046/.095.    Honestly, right now he’s about the last guy I want to see up in an important situation.  And that’s ridiculous for a guy who’s hitting .250/.331/.500 overall.  He’s got to get his head screwed on straight when it matters most.
