Often I'm not sure when I see a play like that in real time whether the umpire got it right. But recently there seem to be a lot of plays at first  base where it's pretty obvious that the ump gets it wrong. These guys are supposed to be at the top of their profession, and they have one job to do. Yet they do it pretty poorly, and it feels like they're getting worse.

There's no accountability, of course. You'd think umpires would be required to meet a certain standard of quality before they are put on a major league field. The umpires with the worst accuracy percentages in the league are still allowed to call balls and strikes and when players inevitably go off on them, the umpires act like victims. Umpires can be as bad as they want and there's no change. That's the real issue. They are pampered and protected even when they suck at what they do, so what incentive is there to get better? Minimum 88% accuracy rate for home plate umpires to start with the ultimate goal of 90% minimum a couple years later. Just little things like that. Force them to get better instead of encouraging them to be poor and maybe we'd see some improvement.

It honestly blows my mind that the MLBUA hasn't done more to improve the performance of their umpires. It would do so much to get people off their backs, but don't seem all that interested in improving themselves. Instead, they just tell everyone to "deal with it!" and throw a fit when they get yelled at. They deserve all the crap they get and they should get more. If machines take all their jobs, they have no one to blame but themselves.

The more senior umpires are the ones most likely to perform poorly.
