Is Sisco Toast?

Sisco has only had 150 ABs this season.  His OBP is 100+ points higher than his average.  His SLG% ain't bad for a catcher.  Its the eye test, but I think he is rather quick getting to the ball from behind the plate when its put in play, but he still has a lot of work to do on his throwing and blocking.  His receiving has looked a little better recently.  Again its the eyeball test.

I think he gets a roster spot next year, but if I was Elias I would give him the winter to take reps at 3B, 2B, 1B, and LF to see if he has value as a utility guy.  Only 25 next year, I think he's been in his head the past 3 seasons, and if given the opportunity to get 400+ ABs in a season at multiple positions, I think he could be a 20HR .800 OPS position player.

Wynns is not a ML catcher in my opinion and it isn’t particularly close.  He is below replacement level.

I don’t disagree, and I was quite surprised to find that at one point in the summer his defense was actually below Sisco’s.

But I don’t care. Bring him up anyway. The only reason Sisco is still around is because he was a reasonably high draft pick. Plus, we don’t have any catchers in the system who are ready or close to ready.

His WRC is 98, and a strikeout rate over 30%, which actually shows quite a bit of improvement, but 30% is still bad. His walk rate is below 9%. I don’t know how fast he is, but he looks like he’s slowed.

If he were good on defense, that would be playable. I was happy with Caleb Joseph doing half of that. But he doesn’t have any “game smarts” His snap judgment is bad, and he can’t throw.

We’re on pace to lose 100 games. There is no reason to play Wynns, and his .400 OPS, over Severino or Sisco.

It sucks we lost and the posters in this thread did a great job summarizing what happened, but it’s not a big deal.

There is no reason to play Sisco either. He is done as a catcher as far as I am concerned. Try him at 1B if you think the bat still has potential. I would at least like to see position players who can give our pitchers a fair chance when we are trying to assess what they can do.

Based on advanced catching statistics, Severino is actually worse than Sisco (although both are among the bottom 6 in the league).

They both stink is not an argument in favor of Sisco. Severino has a very solid 1.2 WAR and has at least thrown out 25% of runners. Sisco's CS is 15.4%!!!! WIth the potential for errors, it is almost better to just concede the base.

I would have liked Sisco to have played every day so we can see if he can hit or not. If he can’t hit he isn’t valuable. This is a lost season so I am not sure why he couldn’t play everyday to see what we have.  He hit when he first came up and then Hyde sat him for a stretch and he stopped hitting.

We keep hearing about Sisco improving defensively and we haven't seen it even a little bit. He can't throw for beans, never really could, and it's not any better.

I like his profile as a hitter, especially as a catcher. It's good enough for a catcher with some upside and some power.

The problem is it doesn't look to me that he brings ANY value to the catching position. So what is he? A platoon DH against RHP at the moment. That's his best profile.

I have no problem playing him but he's hard to watch at times. I keep hoping he'll improve but he might be the most disappointing position player prospect this year outside of Mullins.

In high school Sisco was a SS before moving to catcher his senior year. I'd be curious to see whether he could handle 3B.  Would his arm play there?  I'd imagine so, but it's hard to say.

As others have said, I think having Sisco learn another position (or more) would benefit both he and the team. His bat has potential to be solid, and if he could play an average 3B, and perhaps 1B, while still getting occasional work behind the plate, that versatility would allow him to get more at bats and provide a serviceable (if not more) player to the roster.

This is all speculation of course, but seems to warrant consideration.

Was it my imagination or did Sisco stumble on both of the throws in the 8th inning last night?  Maybe it's his footwork rather than the arm strength that's the problem.

A good throw definitely would have had the force at third on Merrifield's bunt.  I don't think there was any chance to get the force at second on the previous bunt, even with the catcher running--the runner had too good of a jump.  It was not just a poor throw by Sisco, but a poor decision (actually two poor decisions--the ball was rolling foul, and once he picked it up, he should have thrown to first).

His issue has been more mechanical than his actual arm. There are times he puts it all together and it's a good thing. Then there are times he doesn't, looks absolutely awful on a throw, and Wilkerson is relaying it back into the infield as the runner goes from 1st to 3rd on the steal/throw.

He might be alright at third. @Tony-OH and @Luke-OH would be able to comment on his lateral speed, glove, ect as far as it playing there.

    • Holliday went 1 for 2 with 3 walks on Friday night. 2024: .444 OBP, .911 OPS MiLB Career: .447 OBP, .931 OPS His OBP is EXACTLY what this O's team needs, would fill a key offensive weakness at 2nd base, help grind opposing pitching, and magnify the power up and down the lineup.  It's all dependent on his ability to throw and play 2B at a passable level. If Holliday starts to hit at the ML level, the question of who bats leadoff is over for the foreseeable future and we can go back to complaining about 1 slumping hitter or backup catcher at the bottom of the lineup.
    • This. We literally have no lineup holes right now, and Mayo, Norby, Jax lurk. Any trade discussion should center around the four most essential and crucial elements to O's success for the balance of the regular season and playoffs: 1. pitching 2. pitching 3. pitching 4. damn, forgot the 4th one. oh yeah, its pitching.
    • All I know is that Suárez has earned at least one more start, after today.
    • Scherzer still looks like a guy who would be a nice add to our rotation in the second half if the Rangers are sellers.
    • Not happening. I don’t disagree, but Kremer will be slotted in the rotation.
    • I wouldn’t either but the word here is that he’s going back to rotation . Suarez supposedly the one  to be moved to bullpen . I think they should wait and see if Irvin can rebound . If Irvin can’t match Suarez’s work, then he should be moved to bullpen
    • Yes that’s what I was asking. COC was completely off base in his comment. Judge is a great player, and apparently a nice guy. I have nothing against him, or most Yankees, for that matter, though Gil’s tats are off putting. I am expecting a bit of pro Yankee bias, but that’s ok. Also, home runs is a very glittery stat, and might sway some folks. But it should be Gunnar, at least based on the first 81.
