Will Andrew Cashner show up in the O's camp in the next week?

Cashner (33) is still a free agent.  He is comfortable with the O's team.  He likes pitching coach Doug Brocail.  Has had some of his best seasons with him.  He likes Brandon Hyde.  I am not sure how he feels about Mike Elias who traded him last July.

He would solve a lot of problems for the O's rotation giving them Means, Cashner, Cobb and Wojo as the first 4 in the rotation.  They could eat a lot of innings and his 3.83 ERA in 17 starts last year with the O's  stands out.

So why hasn't' he been signed?   Money and trade control.    Last season Cashner made 11m.   8m in salary plus bonuses.   Elias is not going come close to that number.  Elias may be offering 3m with no bonus considering how he has approached signing veteran players this off season.   Also he didn't want to traded last season but he was.   Elias is probably not going to guaranteed that will not happen again.

Those are some major hurdles to overcome for Cashner to be an Oriole in 2020.  Elias recently said that pitchers that come to camp late often do not have a good start to the season.   So if Cashner is to join the O's it probably has to be soon.

Stay tuned.

Is this Andrew Cashner's burner account? Why are we still beating this drum? Were the five other threads about Cashner not enough? He hasn't been signed because he's a terrible pitcher on the tail end of his career who stopped missing bats five years ago. And the underlying numbers don't support any small level of success he's had over that time frame. He's not worth $3M or anything more than a spring training invite. His only selling point is his familiarity with the club and Brocail, which means little or nothing to me.

I think the odds we sign him are 50% or higher.  Elias has repeatedly said it’s pretty likely we’ll sign one more pitcher to a major league contract.    Cashner is the most likely choice of the pitchers remaining.    It won’t thrill me, but I won’t object to it, either.

There isnt much available, worth even thinking about.

Then why even spend the money? He's an awful pitcher and you know he's going to be awful. Why not just promote someone from AAA who at least has the chance of not being awful. And I would literally rather see any other free agent than Jason Vargas in our starting rotation this season. If they're going to take a flyer on someone it should be a Tajuan Walker / Aaron Sanchez type. Both pitchers still have upside and might perform well enough to be flipped at the trade deadline. And if they're just looking for innings eaters then Trevor Cahill, Ervin Santana, Clay Buchholz, and Marco Estrada would all be better options. I just don't understand why everyone is so fixated on bringing back Cashner. Can you imagine if the Mets message board was clamoring for them to resign Jason Vargas? This is the equivalent and it makes no sense.

You know I was going to ding you for the "know he's going to awful" part.  We don't really know that.  However, you do bring up good points, and list some guys who imo clearly have more upside.  So, you kinda change my mind.

Because Stewart, LeBlanc, Hess are likely to give up 5 or 6 runs in the first 3 innings.  And Bailey is probably only good as an opener that averages 3 innings per start.  That kills the pen and make it hard to get through the season.   Probably rushes the O's starter prospects that need  time in the minors to give then the best chance to be successful when they do arrive.

Meanwhile Cashner can give  the O's 150 innings and  23 to 28 starts and had a 3.83 ERA with the O's last season.

However offering 3m may not be enough.  Someone else may pay more.

It’s just because Cashner has signed with us before, and didn’t seem to hate being here.   So, he’s perhaps more likely to sign here this year than many of the others you mentioned.

Simply not a factual statement.

 Here are their 2019 innings:

Walker   1 inning

Sanchez  131 IP,   5.89 ERA

Cahill    102IP   5.98 ERA

Santana  13 IP

Buchholz   59 IP  6.56 ERA

Estrada 23 IP    6.85 ERA

I don't see him putting up a 3.83 ERA again.  I'd take Cashner back, but there are several factors invovled.  Does Cashner want to sign with us, knowing that we'd trade him to the highest seller in July?  At this point, it might not be worth it to Cashner to not be in control of where he's going to play for an entire season.  He might be content with the money that he's made.

I don’t see the harm in signing him. I think it’s a mistake to assume Cobb will be healthy and Le Blanc or Wojo have much to offer. Probably a mistake to assume Cashner has much left to offer either but if throw enough quantity out there then hopefully at least one sticks, right?

Andrew Cashner's xFIP last season was 5.11. In 2018 it was 5.19. In 2017 it was 5.30. If you're going to endorse a GM who fully supports advanced metrics you can't ignore then when you're advocating signing someone like Cashner. And with an average K per 9 rate of 5.65 over the last three seasons he has zero margin for error. Unless you're name is Greg Maddux or Orel Hershiser you can't succeed in the modern era with that type of strikeout rate.

    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
    • How much different? They sat Judge yesterday, they threw their playoff starters for 5+ innings yesterday and today. They are also playing for the best record in the AL. They aren't mailing it in.
    • It’s not just the O’s. I’ve checked the Dodgers who have similar prices and they have a lot of upper deck NLDS games 2 & 3 available. Same for the NLCS. yanks still have seats available also. — In general, I’m sure alot of fans are just gonna wait till the day of to grab tickets.
    • That makes no sense. If they had to win their current series would have looked much different.
