Not familiar with 1877, but the 1919 White Sox certainly did not net on themselves, so0 that is not an example.

I'd feel a smidgen better about what Rose did if he had always bet on his team to win.

He was Godfather to a college teammate of mine. He relayed the story of Rose coming to town (Los Angeles) to bet the ponies. He bragged about dropping $25k at the track that day. I just shook my head.

I wouldn't.  He was still beholden to bookies, and managing the Reds not for their best interest across the season and his players' best interests but instead for Pete Rose' wallet.

That's the context I was responding in.  No mention of which way the bets went, just that they were placed.
